Women in ancient Rome had different lives and education than women today. Since their lives differed so much from men’s lives, women were treated in a different manner than men. Their lives were different in the household, in society, and even in the educational system! Even the poor and the rich had a large gap between them based on what they were allowed to have or do in society. The way women were treated back then has changed so much, and it is important to be informed of these changes.
Women's life in the household is pretty different than it is today. To start off, a woman's duty was to run the home. They were to give birth to and raise the children, yet also attend to the slaves. She also had the choice to make handicrafts, and if the woman was a part of the high class, she could read and study academic subjects. Women had little to no influence in roman society. They were not allowed to vote or hold office in any political role. As well as not being able to vote, women were not allowed to attend or even speak in public assemblies. However, women who had husbands with political power might have been able to influence some changes in society. Women in the lower class had to work to be able to get a living. The jobs that they could have held included being midwives and wet-nurses. If they were not either of those, they ended up working in markets, crafts, or agriculture. When it came to the finances, the women would have to choose a man to act on their behalf. If she had inherited and owned land she was not allowed to control it whatsoever.
