When I get asked who my favorite artist is, I have to think for a while. My music taste is very eclectic ranging from the Grateful Dead to Wiz Khalifa. However, when I think a little deeper about what artist has gotten to me and really made me feel their music, I think of Coldplay. Coldplay is an incredible rock/ alternative band from London and their music is a balance between swagger and swoon. I have been a fan for a while and have also seen them in concert. My love for Coldplay started back in 2002 when their album, A Rush of Blood to the Head was released, with the hit song “Clocks” featured. I first heard the song on the radio and it totally took over my soul. The song begins with crashing piano and drums, followed by Chris Martin’s (the lead singer) soft voice and chilling lyrics calling to go “home, home where I wanted to go”. Prior to hearing “Clocks” on the radio, I had not been familiar with Coldplay, and once I had discovered this amazing group, I was hooked. Before Coldplay became my favorite artist, I was also a fan of Foster the People, another rock/ alternative band known for their hit “Pumped up Kicks.” Although I am still a big fan of Foster the People, Coldplay reigns because no other artist has lyrics and such a sound that hypnotizes me. When I listen to Coldplay I feel as if I go under a trance and cannot think about anything else besides the music. The sometimes melancholy and sometimes bumping melodies encircle my mind and just relax me. The music is very personal to the humble Chris Martin as he writes most of the group’s music. I also experienced a lot of classic rock growing up thanks to my dad. I can remember countless times of driving around with him in his black pick-up truck with Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, and sometimes even the Grateful Dead being played on his favorite radio stations. I think that because of my dad showing me the music he enjoyed listening to, it rubbed off on me for rock music is what I primarily

In Europe, horns gained popularity in the trendy sport of hunting. As this aristocratic sport spread, horn-makers experimented with different shapes and sizes to increase the range of notes possible. In 1636, French musical scholar Marin Mersenne wrote of four different kinds of horns in his Harmonie Universelle: Le grand cor (the big horn), the cor à plusiers tours, (the horn of several turns), le cor qui n'a qu'un seul tour (the horn which has only one turn), and le huchet (the horn with which one calls from afar). Horns such as the cor de chasse and trompe de chasse (pictured left) fall into this latter category. Shortly thereafter, the horn began to appear in the concert halls and theaters. Too raucous for inclusion with the fine oboes and violins in the orchestra pit though, at first the hunting horns were used only onstage in scenes depicting, naturally, the hunt.…

The Goo Goo Dolls music is also relevant to my ever-changing life. The music caused me to do research on the band this lead me to www.robbyslobby.com, which I feel is a poorly designed site. Simple beat, simple rhyme scheme, strong message. "Vans don't cost G's, real niggaz wear these – Vans," says a member of The Pack in the music video aptly titled "Vans." You may be asking yourself, "So, what's the big deal?" The big, highly lucrative deal is the marriage between big name corporations and their partnership with hip-hop. It's nothing new: Run-DMC had "My adiddas", LL Cool J wore Kangol hats, and even Jay-Z incorporated drinking Cristal into his lyrics for a long period of time. With that being said, the new hip-hop generation of today faces many adversities from years and years of subliminal marketing within their own sub-culture. The effects of hyper-commercialism are evident in American culture in general, but especially noticeable within popular rap music and urban associated culture.…

My friend John Le, who I have known since high school, always enjoyed heavy metal music even though everyone else in our friend group enjoyed more traditional teenage music genres, such as hip-hop, R&B, and pop. His music choices alienated him somewhat from the rest of us and lead to many arguments between him and myself on the merits of the heavy metal genre, which works out perfectly because I chose to interview him due to this genuine interest in the experiences that shaped his adoration of heavy metal music. In this essay, my interview with John Le reveals that his fascination with heavy metal music stems from a desire for a genre to express emotional mood shifts and rebellion from the traditional rigid constraints (as well as expectations)…

There are wires growing out of everyone’s ears. That is, to listen to music. Music is an infinite source, whether that source is for lifting up spirits, expressing underlying pain and anger, or just merely a distraction. Music from well-developed Broadway musicals to a series of beats at a party, it is something we all have done: listen to music. Some even say that music defines us but it that really true? Is our music the soundtrack of who we each are? Do what we listen to support our core values in life? To answer this I sought out the one song I listened to most, “This Kiss” by Alex Days and Carrie Hope Fletcher, and interpreted its lyrics to see if it matched with my core values of commitment, happiness, and love.…

    Romanticism In Music

The period of music that affects me more than others is romanticism. Starting from the humble beginnings of the French Revolution where reason and regard to the rights of individuals were at its peak of either falling or ascending. With the recognition of the newly found freedoms it’s not a surprise that the style of music and literature evolved. Enter Romanticism where the distinction between music was grand, where music had character, and where true life experiences could be told. That liberty is one of many reasons why I enjoyed this period.…

The next stop on my musical journey is the Rolling Stones. My mom holds a very special place in her heart for the Rolling Stones and this trait has been passed down to me. I picked the song Beast of Burden to represent our mutual love for the Rolling Stones because not only does it remind me of pleasant memories, but it is also just a feel-good song. When I went to Kindergarten I had half days so every day I could help my mom make dinner and I can still remember sitting on the counter rolling meatballs while my mom and I jammed out to her Rolling Stones tape cassettes. Beast of Burden is the type of song that takes on a life of its own because the drums and the bass provide a solid foundation and a strong tempo, while the guitars and the vocals…

My mom told me that I have been singing for most of my life, even before I could talk. She told me that when I was a baby, I used to hum along to the Sesame Street theme song. As I grew up, I always tried to write my own lyrics to music; I was never very successful. All my lyrics weren't coinciding with what I was feeling but I wasn't quite sure how to express them through song. When I started listening to Linkin Park, I felt that the band members were reading my mind and my heart. In my world, where I felt no one understood my feelings, there were six guys that did. Although the band's lyrics aren't very hard to comprehend, the words are still deep enough and filled with enough heart and emotion to let someone know that they have been through hurt as well; they are no different than any normal, unfamous person. Because of Linkin Park's lyrics, I feel that I can now express myself through song and even though the words might not be hard to understand, they are still my words and feelings.…
