Little did this small dog know what a huge impact she would have on helping soldiers to cope and to heal from battle wounds. Smoky was the first hospital therapy dog, and she came with high credentials approved by Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic.…

How many of us like eating vegetables? Not a lot right, but growing vegetables is still as difficult today as it was in the 1700’s. The invention of the seed drill was really one of the most useful inventions in that time because it helped make the farmers work easier. The seed drill was created by Jethro Tull to make the lives of the laborers easier and not waste the seeds of what could’ve been a surplus of food. The seed drill was a mechanical machine that would plant the seeds in rows rather than the method used prior where farmers would scatter them wastefully because they had to dig all the holes themselves.…

A mechanism is a device that transmits movements so that the output movement is different than the input movement. It can be used to change the direction, speed, force, or type of movement. The output of a robot or any machine is motion and force in some form. A drill press, for example, has two kinds of motion: rotary and linear. The drill spinning provides the rotary motion; moving the drill down through the material is the linear motion. The force or torque applied to the drill must be sufficient to turn the drill through the material. Also, the speed of the drill bit must be within a given range. If the drill is turning too fast, the drill bit will be damaged. To acquire the correct speed, the drill press must have a pulley or gear system. Changing pulleys changes the speed of the drill bit.…

Dangling over the ice cold waves of Lake Superior with my shaking hands gripping a small ledge on Shovel Point. My family decided to take a little trip up to the north shore, camping at Tettegouche State Park, which included a day trip to Shovel Point. Our instructor, a tall man with a backpack full of water, ropes, helmets, and carabiners, met us at the ranger station. There he introduced himself with a friendly “hello”. I could I feel my heart pick up its pace as we began to walk. The walk was hot, uneven, and long. Not only was my heart beating faster because of the walk, but because I knew what the destination was. This long, grueling walk led us to Shovel Point. Shovel Point is a rocky, steep cliff overlooking Lake Superior. It was the…

The first use of electricity by the human race was recorded back to 600 BC when Thales of Miletus wrote about the charging of amber on rubbing it, that is what we know as static electricity. But the most important contribution to electricity was from Nikola Tesla, a mechanical and electrical engineer and inventor he developed commercial electricity. Think of the countless luxuries that are afforded to us by energy workers that we take for granted. Imagine if they were all gone we would all be forced to resort to old methods of getting things done, and stop doing some things all together. Almost all Americans use electricity, and if we did not have it we would be anywhere close to where we are today. Not just America either, economies around the world are completely reliant on electricity.…
