According to dictionary.com, the term dike was created first. A dike is a noun and it is a ditch made in the earth to control water ways such as oceans and rivers. Dyke and dike are the same word and could be used to mean the same thing. Though an actual date is not given as to when that definition of dyke was made, it was the way the word was supposed to be used first. Another definition for dike is used in earth science. In earth science, a dike is part of an igneous rock that intercepts across another rock that is close to it.
