Muskerry Golf Club, situated in beautiful parkland close to the village of Tower, near Blarney was established in 1907 which was originally serviced by a light railway which used to run from Cork city to Blarney (a piece of track and signal has been left for posterity and as a feature on the 18th green). It was originally only a nine hole course until 1924 when the renowned Golf Course Designer Dr. Alister MacKenzie, presented plans for the layout of nine new holes, thus the course was extended to 18 holes. With nearly 50 sponsors of the club and the fact that they have their own web site means that anyone looking on line can easily find them, know their green fees and facilities that they have on offer and can pre book and pay before they even arrive at the club. They also have a pro shop attached where people can get advice and purchase some clubs, golf balls etc. or for those who are not that agile on their feet anymore there is the option to rent a buggy for their round of …show more content…
The cost of maintaining such a site is quite substantial, having a least ten different machines needed for the upkeep of the course alone it was inevitable that something had to give.
Club membership dropped and this naturally impacted on the employees who work there. Pre-recession there were six full time green keeping staff which was reduced to just two and only employed on a three day a week basis which lasted for six years. It is only recently that club membership has started to increase again and that the staff has been increased to three fulltime employees. As peoples’ confidence in the labour market grows so does their desire to treat themselves and enjoy some luxury activities in the fresh air, in nice surroundings and get some exercise in whilst enjoying a game of golf at the same time.
However, should there be another downturn in the economy , I have no doubt that history will repeat itself with regards to a golf club. Even though they have almost fifty sponsors (some of which are quite large and have international connections), if people find themselves back in the same situation as before then the luxury items will be the first to go
