Observation Paper
In America when people are communicating personal space and other non verbal communication skills are important to remember to make the communication successful. The main purpose of this paper is to observe individual verbal and nonverbal behaviors in a typical business office. The first objective is to analyze the ways the individuals used space to communicate. The third objective is to determine what the individuals’ appearances reveal about the formality or context of the situation. Employees can wear jewelry as long as it is business appropriate. Some employees wear more jewelry than others; wear more make-up than others; in this environment appearances do not really make much difference. Material possessions are not overbearing or intimidating in this environment. Expression through appearances are limited in this environment the employees have the opportunity to determine whether to wear a skirt, dress pants, or a Capri pants. As far as shirts are concerned the employees can show an appropriate amount of skin but not too much. The two conversations about business matters had nothing to do with appearances and it was not mentioned. During the one conversation which was about personal matters, the employees did at one point look down at one employees hand as if to look at her ring finger. By observing the employees their behavior shows who is comfortable and confident in the different settings. In the group setting some provided their opinions more freely than if they were speaking exclusively with their supervisor. Some individuals can be perceived as open and friendly, while others come off as shy and closed off. If one person is not contributing to a group conversation that person may be perceived as not interested or against what the rest of the group is talking
