While its popular belief that gas was first used in world war one by the Germans It was in fact first used by French in August 1914. The French had fired tear gas grenades against the Germans. However the German army was the first to give serious study to the development of chemical weapons and use it on a large scale. They were in fact the first to use poison gas. During the afternoon of April 22nd the German bombarded the French using the infamous Mustard Gas. This being the first time French and Algerian troops had seen it they assumed it was just being used to mask an advance by German infantry and ordered their men to stand of the fire step, rifle loaded, bayonet fixed. The effects of the gas were severe, almost directly after inhaling the gas it would destroy your respiratory system, bringing on choking attacks. The French and Algerian troops fled in disorder and panic which created the perfect opportunity for the Germans. The poison gas was effective and had already influenced World War One. After that other forces began developing their own variations of poison gas as well as gas mask to counter poison gas which had already greatly changed World War One.
This shows how many important technological advances occurred in world war one and also how they had influenced the war. Some technological advances that I didn’t cover that deserve to be mentioned are tracer bullets, interrupter gear, air traffic
