Wrestling in the Olympics
Recently, the decision has been made to remove wrestling from the Olympics in the year 2020. This heavily debated decision was made because it is said that wrestling does not produce enough ticket sales and is not popular enough on the global scale. Therefore, it has been proposed that it be replaced with karate or rock climbing. With this major change in the Olympics, many people are going to suffer, such as returning Olympic placers or even nations that are successful in wrestling. Wrestling should not be removed from the Olympics because it is a historical part of the Olympics. Wrestling was one of the first five sports in the Olympics and the oldest sport …show more content…
still remaining in it today. Wrestling also helps in everyday life. As a great wrestler and coach Dan Gable said “Once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy.” (www.brainyquote.com)This quotation personifies the soul of wrestling and shows that wrestling is the perfect sport .Wrestling doesn’t discriminate, no matter your body type or height or weight there is a spot for you in wrestling. All that matters in wrestling is being tough and having the desire to win. Also, wrestling is a coeducational sport meaning that both men and women can compete in it. These factors combine to make wrestling the perfect sport for the world to join in together for competition. The removal of wrestling from the Olympics may remove a large motivating factor for dedicated wrestlers to work hard. The Olympics rule committee have decided to remove wrestling from the Olympics because they think that other events can bring in more money; however, wrestling is one of the most toughest sports mentally and physically and is a combination of speed, strength, agility, hard work, and dedication, it is a perfect Olympic sport for the modern world, wrestling should not be removed from the Olympics. “Wrestling is a combat sport in which players try to grapple their opponents to the ground using a variety of holds. It demands concentration and strategy, in addition to strength.
The two main variations are freestyle, the more popular form, and Greco-Roman wrestling.
Women’s wrestling is also popular in some countries, such as the United States.” (Isport, 56) The
Olympics cannot exist without wrestling. Wrestling is the basic sport of humanity. Everyone has wrestled before, when you ruff housing around with your sibling or friends you’re wrestling. Dan
Gable is an important person in wrestling history, and is probably one of the best wrestlers to ever live.
In the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany he brought home the gold medal without giving up a single point. "They might have thought that wrestling was going to be an easy pass, but as you can see, there are places like this all over the world. It's just not Iowa.
There's places like this all over the world that will generate this type of enthusiasm for the sport,"
Gable said. (www.foxnews.com) That takes extreme dedication and devoting your life to wrestling. Wrestling is one of the hardest if not the hardest sports in the world; it has derived from many countries and is the main sport in many countries. Wrestling is a sport where no one else can be blamed if the wrestler is not successful. It is one person against another. It can be done effectively by people with significant disabilities. A man born with one leg, Anthony
Robles, has won an NCAA championship in wrestling. There has been high school matches where competitors with disabilities have competed and been successful. There is no other sport where people with disabilities can participate on an equal basis successfully with kids …show more content…
without disabilities. This sport should be exempt from the removal of the Olympics. Wrestling doesn’t only help to become successful on the mat; it also helps in everyday life. Marcus Aurelius quoted “The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing.”
(www.illinoismatmen.com) wrestlers in general are better, harder working individuals than non-wrestlers. If you go in the room every day motivated and work your butt off and keep pushing even when your mind is telling you to quit, that’s how to become successful.
Wrestling is just as much of a mental sport as it is a physical sport. Being mentally tough is doing exactly what you don't want to do, exactly when you don't want to do it. The mind tires before the body.
Dan Gable quoted “Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” Dan gable is a perfect example of what it takes to be successful in wrestling. He worked his butt off and devoted his life to wrestling and in the end it paid off. He walked away with an Olympic gold medal. Wrestling is a high school sport, college sport, Olympic sport, but most of all it is a life sport. It can prepare you for life better than any other sport and it is crazy for the most widespread sport in the world to be removed from the Olympic Games. Wrestling has been a major event since the beginning of Olympics. It was one of the first five sports and it would be ridiculous to even think about removing it. Since the beginning of the Olympics in ancient Greece, some type of wrestling has been included and been very popular. Today, wrestling is still a beloved sport in many countries, including Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, and the United States. Wrestling is embedded within the cultures of many countries and has a great deal of historical
significance.
