Argumentative Essay: Why Marching Band Is A Sport
Marching band is a sport. The amount of physical work done during marching band, easily qualifies it to be a sport. Marching band reaches the standard of the definition of a sport.
According to the Oxford Dictionary. The dictionary states that “a sport is a an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Well people would say “What’s so hard about walking and playing an instrument?” 1. They are marching. 2.That takes both mental and physical exertion. A sport… “An individual or team competes against others for entertainment.” Bands go to Band Competitions. A sport has a team which is also a group of people that are coming and working together for a common

As stated in the dictionary, “Exertion is the use of physical or perceived energy. It normally connotes a strenuous or costly effort related to physical, muscular, philosophical actions and work.” The muscular, physical actions, and work put into marching band all comes from the marching and warm ups done at practices. Bands do not walk out to the practice field, they march. Staying at attention, and marching down to the field, makes your calves burn and your arms want to fall asleep. Although marching out to the field isn’t for a long period of time, the band members, have to the endure hours of marching band practice, in the heat of the sun, carrying an instrument and playing it. Along with that they must also stay in step (in sync) with not only those around them but with the entire band. Some bands even give disciplinary punishments if you do something incorrectly. Some have to do pushups, others run laps. Sometimes those things are just done before warm ups.
Athletes and other people will claim that marching band isn’t a sport because it does not have an actual team. As stated in the dictionary. The definition of a team is: “a group of players forming one side in a competitive game or sport.” By definition Marching band is a

But, to be honest, being a band geek has nothing to do with marching band. Being a band geek means that they go overboard with being in band, not that they are in band. This stereotype is the main reason why people don’t appreciate marching band and the work that they put into a performance. Everyone notices the work and performance of the football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, track, cross-country, golf, and soccer players, but not the marchers. This is because society has told the general population that being in a sport automatically makes them “cool” and that everyone needs to pay attention to everyone that plays a sport. So, based on this logic, if marching band is found and counted as a sport, then every marcher would be considered “cool” and would probably be invited into the “popular” crowd, instead of being stuck as their own group that hangs out only in the band room. This is why so many people have been debating over the topic of marching band becoming a sport. They don’t want the “band geeks” at the same level of popularity as they are. Aside from all of the fears of marching band becoming a sport, here are some reasons why marching band should be considered a sport. Marchers work just as hard as football players. Marchers and football players both practice for crazy amounts of time and prepare for one event. Sports teams and marching bands all work towards one…

Marching band and concert band have two completely different concepts. However, many high school students consider the word band as being able to play some kind of musical instrument. Being a five year marching band member and playing in concert band for seven years, I feel as if I know the difference between these two activities. One of the main differences between marching and concert band is the mental process one must go through to memorize the music and the steps on the field. Obviously marching band is much more physical than concert band, and the adrenalin one gets before competing is extraordinarily different. Another noticeable difference is the marching band is under the direction of a student drum major and not the actual band director who conducts all concert band activities. Personally, I do not understand why the students at my high school did not know the difference between marching and concert band. In my opinion, the difference is very clear.…

In high school, many people praise athleticism and make idols of the star athletes. I am surprised by how little of that praise is directed toward marching bands, though. It’s actually much more difficult and tasking than people think! As a general statement, each member of the band has to remember every single movement, every single piece of music to be played, and how these two items are to be played or marched. Not only is it tasking mentally, but physically as well. For example, every marching player carries their own, usually heavy, metal instrument by only the strength of their shoulders for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. On top of holding the instruments up, marchers need to actually move their legs in time and march with very precise, grueling technique that requires balance, coordination, and simple muscle power.…
