Cultural Dimensions
Individualistic/Collectivist: -This is a collectivist culture because we need everyone’s collaboration in order to present a neat formations as well as harmonizing music. If one person falls out of place then everything either looks or sounds off.
High/Low Uncertainty Avoidance: -Marching band has a high uncertainty avoidance because there are many commands and positions we must learn before performing. For instance, while marching we are not allowed to make movements such as scratching ourselves, fixing our hair, and looking around.
High/Low Power Distance: -For each instrument, there is at least one section leader. Since they are our friends or we have the same classes, we …show more content…
We focus intensely on formations and body movement; therefore, if at least one person is out of line, either our section leader or band director will loudly inform that specific person.
Talk-oriented/Silence-oriented: -This co-culture is talk-focused because in order to progress as a large group we need to give feedback on what is working and what is not. During our music practices we communicate by helping other players with their musical challenges. There are multiple words we must respond with when the drum major instructs commands.
Explain how being a part of your co-culture affects your communication with others, both within and outside your co-culture:
-Through marching band, I've learned to give straight-forward instructions which I find is more effective in most scenarios outside of the culture. Due to the constant command shoutings, I’ve improved on projecting my voice. Lastly, I've learned how to properly treat my leaders though it’s a low power
