Writing Practice: Indirect Memo
Cell Phone Violation: Message to associates at Ford-Brown law firm, Santa Monica, California.
“Company policy states that personnel are not to conduct business using cell phones while driving,” Jim Segal reminds you. He’s a partner at Ford-Brown law firm, where you work as Ford-Brown’s corporate office manager.
You nod, waiting for him to explain. He already issued a memo about the rule last year, after that 15-year-old girl was hit and killed by an attorney from another firm. Driving back from a client meeting, the attorney was distracted while talking on her cell phone. The 15-year-old girl’s family sued the law firm and won $30 million, but that’s not the point. The point is that cell phones can cause people to be hurt, even killed.
Segal explains, “Yesterday, one of our associates called his secretary while driving his car. We can’t allow this. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, 20-30 percent of all driving accidents are related to cell phone usage. From now on, any violation of our cell phone policy will result in suspension without pay, unless the call is a genuine health or traffic emergency.”
In addition, you read just the other day in Santa Monica City’s local newspaper that drivers who are spotted texting or talking on a cell phone while driving will receive a $165 traffic ticket.

As the law firm’s corporate office manager, it is your responsibility to communicate with all employees corporate policy updates.
