I wanted to know what was trending these days with lamps and furniture, because I want this lamp to fit in with our new, somewhat modern house. We have a lot of trendy wooden furniture in our house so i wanted to make a lamp that would fit in with the layout. But I didn’t know exactly what is popular in furniture today, So I went to the internet to find oust some answers. At first I went on google to find out what furniture are in style now. I went to a couple websites made by interior designers, one of them being a furniture website that has many different trends going on around you in furniture sales. It had an article about how people want these “mining lamps”.

These Wonderful Wooden Lamps Mimic Old Mining Equipment
Published: May 22, 2015 • References: crowdyhouse & design-milk
Designer Françoise Oostwegel designed the Zuid Oak Wood Lamp to resemble old-school mining lamps. The lamps take the form of a 3D octagon that has had each face removed leaving only the connecting edges. The edges are made using copper and oak wood and have a handle on the top to solidify the mining lamp inspiration. By adding the copper wire it creates a warm, reflective glow when turned on.
The mining lamps are available in different sizes and can be used as a handheld light, a floor or table lamp and can be hung from the ceiling as a chandelier. Every aspect of the lamp including the color, material and shape tell a story about The Netherlands, which is where the inspiration originated. The simple design makes an appropriate decor piece but the mining lamps are also very practical and conveniently transportable.
When I saw this I thought that that is exactly what I needed to make, something simple yet looks pleasant to look at, something that can be carried and moved around at will so that means it cannot be heavy, and something that uses different materials to add that reflective glow of the lamps light.

This was a great Idea but it needed a bit of originality to be added to it. I couldn’t accept this project if It isn’t from my own mind. So I needed to do more research. I went and looked at a website that was all about the trends in furniture in 2014. Custom Made Furniture http://freshome.com/2014/04/02/15-fresh-furniture-trends-watch-2014/ Individuality is a big thing, and it seems to be something which the wealthy feed on through expensive personal customizations and products that only they have.  Customized made furniture can be extortionately expensive, but it can also be accessible and affordable enough to the average Joe.  Custom doesn’t have to mean expensive as all it takes is a person who creates these pieces as a passion, who isn’t as interested in huge profits, but rather takes pleasure in the joy of creating the piece. Custom is usually noticeably different and different sparks conversation.  People are now expressing their personality through their furniture more and more.  In 2014 we have already seen and will continue to see a grow in custom furniture and personal touches within the home. This goes along with the personalized phase of it, custom wooden furniture and decorations are what people are looking for and what is in style. I really like how it is about individuality and expressing yourself through furniture and items you make/purchase, how it takes heart and soul to make something with personality and that is what custom made pieces of furniture are.

As a designer, Tiffany wanted to be able to incorporate art in the average household (Johnson 11). His main inspirations were from works of the Near East and Japan. He adored the intricate patterns in Indian art and was fascinated with the love for nature in Japanese paintings. Every piece of furniture not only had a function but usually possessed an artistic quality. Tiffany created a unique stained glass shade for lamps that not only served as a colorful accent to a room but also reduced the glare problem of the incandescent light bulb (Johnson 45). Every piece in a room was subject to an ornate design that transformed it into an art form and not just a typical piece of furniture. In example, Tiffany designed Eastern influenced stenciled motifs in which he painted on the drawing room doors of the house of Samuel Clemens (Johnson 32). He also used ornate wallpaper to adorn walls that usually depicted an organic scene of leafy vines or Japanese bamboo.…

Modern technology has shown to have many impacts on the way activities are both perceived and accomplished. Contemporary cars and airplanes enable us to travel longer distances then those that existed a century ago. Due to the use of cell phones and web-cams, a person can instantly connect with others on a global scale, figuratively transporting them across the globe with a simple call. Mass amounts of information can be gathered simply and efficiently using the internet compared to a Saturday trip to the library scavenging through encyclopedias. Though, there are many benefits to the increase of technology, studies have shown that there are also negative impacts as well. Technology offers a large amount of information, from pictures to text to sounds as well as lights, in a shorter and shorter amount of time. The brain then has to adjust to this vast amount of information in order to process it, changing the way we see and think. One aspect of human culture greatly altered by technology has been creative expression in all of its forms. As previously stated, technology offers both positive and negative impacts in all aspects of mankind, with creative expression being no different.…

Lumè is a hanging lamp that exudes a strong retro flavor. It throws us immediately into a past that we have not lived but that never ceases to fascinate us: the period of the Second Industrial Revolution, when Thomas Edison lived and a new era for the lighting industry was about to begin. The first words that come to our minds when we think of that part of history are energy and electricity, the driving forces that gave life to new inventions. Lumè, with its irregularly bronzed metal holder, reminds us a little bit of the iron or copper pipes that made up the gears of the new machinery, and became the support for Edison’s light bulbs. Lumè of course is not designed for the incandescent bulbs of the time, which due to their high consumption…

The shapes of the wooden lights are inspired by common, everyday household items. Some of the designs were based on child spinning tops with similarities such as the grooves around the edges replicating the diverse spinning top designs from around the world, including a replica of the one which Leonardo Di Caprio spun in the movie Inception. The idea behind the designs was to pay homage to the famous designers Charles and Ray Earnes who played important roles inspiring Porky Hefer’s life.…

However, with a strict check-in luggage rule, a foreign tourist like me would very much like to travel as light as possible – hence the dilemma of “To buy or not to buy”: on the one hand, this is an opportunity to get hold of a piece of design that is not readily available to the Chinese market, but safety of the lamp while in transport was another big concern as the lamp “FINE 400” table lamp has a thin structure that might not withstand the “brutal-ness” of airport…

My brother-in-law Marcus loves antiques. That was the main reason why his grandmother left him an old cupboard in her will. He had often admired it in her home and told her how much he liked it. The cupboard is now in Marcus’ house, where it gives character to the cloak-room. It is a traditional Swedish cupboard, hand-made over 200 years ago and painted in the rustic style that was characteristic for the taste of the countryside people of that time. Its colors have faded, but it is truly gorgeous and invites you to take a closer look at all its details. You can picture the carpenter working on it in his little workshop, adding wood-carvings just for the beauty of the cupboard and making sure this piece of furniture would be able to serve many generations of a family. Not everybody shares Marcus’ love for antiques though. Nowadays many people are drawn to novelty. Fashion changes constantly, and new trends are born every day. Should it be your goal to follow the trends and upgrade your personal belongings to the latest and the newest on the market? When it comes to furniture, the answer might surprise you. I have found that antiques often can be a better choice than newly manufactured furniture when it comes to economy, quality and adding personality to your home. (Thesis statement)…
