Is Year-Round Schooling Better for the Children?
There is no doubt that the school system in the United State needs some adjusting. There is a proposal of possibly extending school hours or shifting the schools into a year-round type system. There are many advantages to having the school operate in a year-round schedule as opposed to the traditional schedule as well as disadvantages. A year-round schooling system needs to be considered for the United States county wide because shorter summer breaks allow children to retain more information from the previous year, better opportunities for local businesses and graduating seniors/teenagers looking for …show more content…
There is less competition when the students are on vacation and are trying to find employment because there are fewer students on vacation at the same time. This provides a business with workers throughout the year as opposed to just in the summer. Because a year-round calendar has the students and the faculty on vacation at different times of the year, businesses that are busiest during the summer months now have a steadier stream of business throughout the year. I was in the marching band throughout my entire high school career. Because of the practices and competitions that I participated in year-round, I missed out on the opportunity to experience an afterschool job. I feel like that was a major disadvantage on my part when I graduated and needed to get a job with no experience in anything. When classes started and we were reviewing the topics from the previous year I found that it had been almost two years since I had covered that information. Once we moved on to the “new” information I was still bored because for me most of that was review as well. It wasn’t until well into the second half of the school year when I started to actually learn new material. When I reached high school (ninth grade in my school district) I joined the marching band and guard where I spent the majority of my summers either at practices or away at camp learning our shows. There was no time for me to spend my summer vacations with my non-band friend with the exception of the early summer when I played softball. I feel that a year-round calendar works very well with the elementary and middle/junior high school aged children, but once they move into the high school level then they should be in a traditional calendar.
Although the schooling system that we use here in the United States was designed around the planting
