Introduction to Yoga
What is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility balance and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The practice originated in India about 5,000 years ago, and has been adapted in a variety of ways.
What are the health benefits of yoga?
Dozens of scientific trials have been published on yoga. most studies suggest that yoga has many benefits and is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, especially strength, flexibility and balance.

Don't I need to be flexible to do yoga?
No, Yoga will slowly improve your flexibility and help you go beyond your normal range of movement, so that you then feel more comfortable during normal daily activity. It is important to find the balance between flexibility and strength, being over flexible without strength in the joints is as bad as not being flexible.
Fat Burning & Muscle Strength
Do you hate being yelled at in high intensity boot camps and dance workouts where you just cant get the steps ? but you still want to shed some unwanted fat ? then Yoga is the answer. Even though its considered a more relaxed approach to exercising, it can be very effective with burning fat and increasing muscle tone. Yoga is the original functional body weight training that really is an all in one workout.
Types of Yoga
There are many different types of yoga, some of the most common and popular types of yoga include:
1. FFY Yoga - Yoga based on the principals of fitness, including a blend of Vinyasa flow and Ashtanga to strength, core and flexibility. This is a popular form of modern form of yoga that appeals to a broad range of people as there is no meditation or chanting which can sometimes put people off taking up Yoga.
2. Bikram Yoga - Yoga in 105 degree heat and in 40% humidity. Bikram has 26 poses with lots of alignment work.
3. Hatha Yoga - Slow and gentle movements relaxing

    Bikram yoga was developed thirty years ago by Bikram Choudhury, a renowned Hatha Yoga Master. It is a specific yoga practice that is carried out in 105˚ F at 40% humidity for 90 minutes. Some studies and practitioners have suggested that Bikram yoga practice has positive impacts on physical health as well as decreasing stress and anxiety. There were certain inclusion criteria for participation in this study. Age was not an exclusion and participants ranged in age from 18 to over 60 years of age. This study sought to interview active students of Bikram yoga who have been practicing consistently for at least the last eight weeks, at a minimum of three times per week. Students meeting the requirements at the Bikram yoga studios in San Antonio were invited to complete the survey instrument from November 16 through November 26, 2011. Seventy-five students responded to the survey. The results indicated that there are significant positive results from regularly practicing Bikram yoga. Since Bikram yoga encourages students to hold poses in a “hot” room it increases heart rate and acts as a cardiovascular exercise without the high impact normally associated with cardio exercises. The results of the survey instrument yielded over 50% of respondents reporting an answer of “somewhat better” for all of the questions, indicating that most respondents see a benefit in their practice. Additionally, stress and anxiety decreased with over 80% of respondents reporting somewhat to much less anxious and stressed.
