In an article published in The Washington Post, Roberto A. Ferdman states that a study by Harvard Business School found that CEOs make over 350 times the amount of an average worker (Ferdman). An unresolved problem that I wish to investigate during my undergraduate years is the lack of equal pay for equal work in American society. In 1963, John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into effect, making it illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of sex. Back then women were paid an average of 59 cents for every dollar that a man made and President Kennedy was attempting to shrink the gender wage gap. There are sobering statistics out there about just how miserable people really feel in the workplace. With the economy the way it is today more and more people feel trapped with no way out. When you account for experience, education, job choices, and hours worked, the gender based wage gap almost entirely disappears. Growing up as a child, I was born with a natural drive to compete and to be involved in extracurricular activities. Coming from a family that strives for greatness in the sport and the livestock industry, my natural competitive instincts kicked in during my toddler years. An early law that attempted to end the gender wage gap was the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act. This act said that, in the U.S, employees of public jobs will get 12 weeks of partial pay leave after a child’s birth or to take care of a sick relative or themselves. The United States has a major problem beyond the political differences, trillion dollar debts, and the country tearing itself apart. That problem is inequality. The same inequality which existed in the 1900s exist today. Women are not getting paid equal, even though men and women both do the amount of work. This is alarming since if in over a hundred years the United States has not solved a simple human rights issue, then what will happen when a major humanitarian issue arises. In the beginning my job was very basic with minimum task which made the day seem forever long. It didn’t take long for me to take interest in other areas of the workforce. I’m very organized and highly detailed in my notes which allowed me to help others in their projects. During these three years, I’ve learned so much about the company, the people I work with, and the customers we serve. I’ve made personal connections with my customer. I think personal connections can make things run smoother and also gives the customer a sense of security. A customer is not viewed upon as a cash value but as family. In my eyes we help each other grow and at the end of the day, it’s a win-win for both sides. I’ve been given the privilege to train others in daily task and help manage some of our co-workers. It’s extremely important to have a positive attitude and the knowledge to lead others.
