Zion
Nature is a beautiful thing to experience. To be engulfed in nature such as hiking or exploring within a forest is a once in a life time opportunity. Last summer I went to Zion national park for a three day hiking trip. Although the trip was short I felt I saw God’s land in its entirety. The first day I did three simple hikes. The first hike was the River Walk which was the easy portion of the Narrows hike. As I started hike the mountains surround me and the long vined plants lightly grazed my head within a light brush. As I looked around I could see deer and squirrels scurrying around in what is their home grazing on the plentiful plants and drinking from the rushing streams of water. The hike itself is ¾ of a mile until the narrows start; at this point a small bench and large sticks are provided for if you decided to start the narrows that day. I chose not to and wait until my last day so I can dedicate my whole last day hiking in the narrows. The next hike for day one was a ½ mile hike called weeping rock; the ½ mile part sounds easy but it is not. The entire hike is a steep uphill walk and since I’m not as physically fit as most this hike was an enormous challenge for me. At least the end of the trail is a reward. The name of the trail derives from a portion of the mountain leaking 400 year old water out of a natural spout. I took this opportunity and rushed toward the water and used it as a temporary shower as well did other incoming hikers to wash off all the sweat from my body. This water also made for an exceptional drink to quench my thirst with no chance of contamination. The last hike of the day I did the Emerald Pools paths. This hike had three levels with a pool 300 year old pools of water at each level. In total for each level the hike was around six miles. Although the walk in lengthy the hike itself is simple as long as you have hiked in the past and can keep your balance. As arrived at each pool at ate a portion of a cliff bar I had stored

    Radiant Red Rock

One of the most unique and special National Parks to me is Zion in Utah. The Colorado Plateau region lies along the side of Zion. This Park is very beautiful and has many different attributes to it but with out a doubt its red dirt and mountains are wonders. Zion is 229 square miles (147,551 acres) and has around 75 species of mammals, 271 birds, 32 reptiles and amphibians, 8 fish. The rock layers have been through so much; for example, they have been uplifted, tilted, and eroded, forming a feature called the Grand Staircase. This incredible landmark also carries the Virgin River right through it. My experiences at Zion have been only but amazing, I have learned so much and enjoy being surrounded by such a radiant red rock. I have found that this park has much history to still be found. What I have come across to be most interesting at this National Park is the Virgin River, Checkerboard Mesa and the Sedimentation taken place.…

In a lifetime of exploration, writing, and passionate political activism, John Muir made himself America's most expressive spokesman for the mystery and majesty of the wilderness. A crucial figure in the creation of our national parks system and a visionary forecaster of environmental awareness, he was also a master of natural description who suggested with exceptional power and intimacy the landscapes of the American West. “The Boyhood of a Naturalist” is Muir's account of growing up by the sea in Scotland, of coming to America with his family at age eleven, and of his early fascination with the natural world.…

Camping and being in the outdoors has been a significant part of my life for the last eight years. As a child, I never enjoyed it much. Three years ago, my family along with four other families decided to take a trip to Glacier National Park. The sky-piercing mountains and the beautiful lakes urged me to explore the outdoors more. From hiking through the mountainous trails to driving up the mountains through the Going-to-the-Sun road, I finally began to realize the relief and soothing sense that nature had to offer. Despite the love I finally found in the outdoors, I was never the dedicated and…

Growing up in the Deer Run area I detested wilderness. I went to an elementals school by the name of Pete Gallego; it is located on the outskirts of Eagle Pass and we didn't have to go far to see vast wilderness. To the students of Pete Gallego Elementary, wilderness was a barren wasteland that only homed rattlesnakes and hares. We saw it every day at recess; there were mesquite trees, more mesquite tree and believe it or not a few hundred more mesquite trees. They weren’t even the green ones; they had this dirty grey hue to them, as if they had been bleached by years of children’s tears. So when my sixth grade teacher gave us the project of, “take time out of your day to look at and appreciate nature.” I was livid; I was not going to walk around this desert and risk my life to appreciate sadness and sorrow. Little did I…

Where are we?” (Thoreau 12/7/16). With these questions, Thoreau highlighted the importance of often being acquainted with nature, indicating that it provides a sense of self-identity. Today, many people go on walks, hikes, or go rock climbing to contemplate their lives or to associate themselves with their surroundings. However, with the planet’s transformation, how will it be possible for future generations to feel the same spiritual and physical connection?…

    Into the Wild

In “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, the beauty of nature is reiterated multiple times. When recounting his personal experience in climbing the Devils Thumb, Krakauer described a picture he had seen of the mountain as having, “held an almost pornographic fascination for me(135).” Christopher McCandless was one of the many who was so drawn to the wild that whenever the chance arose he whisked himself away from his family and embraced the wilderness. The year upon his graduation of high school, McCandless went on an extended camping trip by himself, and did not return until just a day or two before school started for the next year. This however was just one of Chris’s trips. Since he was a young boy he had always been drawn to nature. His family worked nearly nonstop, but when the chance arose the family would take to the road and camp out of the back of the truck. Christopher’s father Walt recounted, “Chris loved those trips, the longer the better (108).” These lengthy trips must have given McCandless a taste of the glamour nature held, because he carried on with the adventures all through high school and college.…

Wilderness is an aspect of nature that has been changed by the perspectives of humans for all of history. Native cultures viewed wilderness as something that they live within and a part of. Nature was the location of spirituality and sacred; however, European settlers viewed the wilderness as something to be feared, due to their inability to understand the unknown. And while those views have started the belief, today, Americans view the wilderness as a source of beauty, life, and harmony for both people and animals. Due to these shifts, people have begun making preservatives efforts towards wilderness. According to law, wilderness is free. It is not controlled or limited by man and has the right to grow and just be as much as it pleases. Yet, wilderness is also natural and flawed. The unchanging landscape and animals are what make the wilderness beautiful and what it is. And those aspects that create these scenes of tranquility, and sometimes chaos is what drew Ansel Adams to it.…

The summer of 2009, my family hopped into my little car looking forward to a peaceful outdoors vacation, our destination, a tranquil cabin located in Summersville, West Virgina. The area was spectacular, the cabin quaint, the water blissfully inviting, everything was just perfect, we found our own little utopia. Many days we would hike down to the lake enjoying picnics atop the gently sun warmed boulders as the soft breeze caressed our faces. It was sensationally relaxing, I had but a care in the world, until we came across that magnificent 43 foot waterfall.…
