Zolpidem has slight muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties, but it has not been approved for use in muscle relaxation or seizure prevention. High dosages of this drug are more likely to cause unpleasant side effects such as hallucinations and amnesia. Common side effects are drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, lightheadedness, "drugged" feeling, tiredness, loss of coordination, stuffy nose, dry mouth, sore throat, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and stomach upset, headache, or muscle pain. Contrary to earlier studies, more recent research has indicated that zolpidem is in fact a potent anticonvulsant. The anticonvulsant effects are not realized until the normal dosage range has been surpassed (meaning sedation would still be a major side …show more content…
If a woman is pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant and wants a healthy baby, it is very important to avoid drug use during pregnancy. Illegal drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine are not the only drugs harmful to fetal development; Commonly used over-the-counter medicines, along with substances such as caffeine and alcohol, can have lasting effects on an unborn child. Taking Zolpidem during a pregnancy is considered safe depending on the severity of the sleep complications. However, pregnant women are warned not to use drugs and decrease medication usage during the pregnancy because studies show that using drugs (legal or illegal) - during pregnancy has a direct impact on the fetus. If a pregnant woman smokes, drinks alcohol, or ingests caffeine, so does the fetus. Similarly, marijuana or crystal methamphetamine usage endangers the fetus and feels the impact of these dangerous drugs. Cocaine usage not only impacts the pregnant woman’s health but also the health of the unborn baby. The consequences of using cocaine include heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, and seizures and these life-threatening health problems can also be passed to an unborn
