A Discussion on Georgia O'Keeffe's Paintings
Georgia O'Keeffe's work was so great because she painted things in an abstract way, but they were still familiar to the viewer. She used vivid, bold colours and shapes of nature. She would change the scale of an object so much that it would fill up a whole canvas. Like for example "from the faraway nearby", witch is a painting of a deer's skull. The title of this painting refers to the "faraway," a location that the artist once said was " a beautiful, untouched lonely-feeling place." Georgia O'Keeffe painted familiar things of nature that were around her, such as flowers. In 1929 when she visited a friend in Mexico, her life and art changed. She painted objects found in the desert such as: a sun bleached animal skull and dessert sky. She used the colours of the Southwest in her paintings-tans, greys, reddish browns and whites.

She was also interested in painting "negative space", such as the hole in a pelvis bone or the space between clouds. " Pelvis, red and yellow," 1960. Is one of many examples of this, In this painting, O'Keeffe interprets the pelvis bone with a fiery palette of reds and yellows, differentiating it from the more naturalistic colouring of the other pelvis pictures.

I like Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings because of the beautiful colours and oversized objects. When I look at one of her flower paintings, such as "Red Poppy", I could stare at it for a long time and find so much detail. Georgia O'Keeffe made a simple object that I normally take for granted and turned it into something really important and beautiful.

I personally think that O'Keeffe was an artistic genius. She created a new way to look at objects that we take for granted, and paved the way for many women

The piece titled Painted Circa 1921-22, Georgia O’Keeffe’s Lake George Reflection, the most ambitious in scale of her works from the 1920s, is a meditation on the sublime, building upon the tradition of the 19th century Hudson River School artists who sought to capture the drama and beauty of the unspoiled landscape surrounding Lake George. The painting “Painted circa” look at the angle horizontally, the painting exemplifies the boldly colorful landscapes which foreshadowing the abstracted paintings of the New Mexico hills from her later years. A favorite flower of hers, she began painting the Black Iris with oil on canvas in 1926. By enlarging the petals beyond life-size proportions, she would draw the viewers attention to the small details, such as the soft, natural curves and textures, that might otherwise be overlooked on a flower. O'Keeffe beautifully gradates the colors from deep black purples in the center to delicate pinks, grays, and whites on the outer edges. The center of the painting catches the eye instantaneously. The small, circular black hole is surrounded by slightly lighter hues of purple and naturally, opens up into the petal below. By looking deeper into the flower, it is possible to see one single vein running from the center, downward into the petal. The flower perfectly blends into the background around the edges. There isn't much space in the painting that isn't used by the flower, and the backdrop is very neutral in color. Georgia O’Keeffe is thought by many to have spearheaded the feminist art movement through her work. Her flower images, including this one, often received interpretations from feminist critics, who saw these paintings as veiled illusions to the female…

Artist Georgia O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887, on a small wheat farm located in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. From the young age of ten she developed a passion for art and knew that that is what she wanted to do in life. As she once said “I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. Meaning that art was an outlet for her to express feelings and emotions she had a hard time dealing with. When she became older she left her agrarian home and moved to New York where she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and became apart of the Art Students League in New York.…

Finally, I choose Henry Ossawa Tanner, a famous black painter who grow-up around slavery. Tanner moved to Paris to study and started doing art there. I chose his first painting, The Banjo Lesson because it kind of reminded me of last week class. A father and son, sitting down playing with each other, learning how to play the Banjo, the father pasting down his knowledge to his son. Also, I don’t know why, but The Annunciation also reminds me of everything we learned from this class. From the Virgin Mary, the women clothes, gender rights, too much, much…

During the nineteen seventies, there was an increase in political awareness, which initially stared in 1960, along with the economic liberty of women and the dimming of the hipster movement. Nineteen seventy was also the year Paula Scher graduated, it has been called the “golden days of illustration”. There were well established arts at that time, like Miltion Glaser, Seymour Chwast, James McMullen, Pual Davis whom Paula perceived as inspiration. Paula’s work doesn’t have many distinct features that display the influence of the artist above on her work, since she has a style of her own, but there are some corresponding color pallets.…

American art has been molded and shaped by different cultures around the world, and through the years different artists have given different kinds of art their own little special touch. A very famous type of painting is oil painting, and Americans just so happen to be very good at making them. One oil painting that almost everyone is familiar with is “American Gothic” by Grant Wood, and another one that is a little less famous is “The Peaceable Kingdom” by Edward Hicks. Both pieces of work come from different time periods, making it easy to see how American Art has evolved yet also stayed the same.…

Art can be expressed in so many ways photography, sculptures, animation, etc. The component I love about art is you never know the real meaning behind the piece. Sure history can tell the story but it will not tell why the artist created the artwork or where the inspiration came from. One piece of art that really inspires me is the Statue of Queen Boudica and her two daughters. It is the statue that stands outside the House of Parliament in London. I personally have never visited the statue but hope to one day. The piece inspires me because it shows a woman in power and fighting for what she wants. Queen Boudica was so powerful and victorious that they had to get special people to stop her and her army. I am a strong believer in woman are just as equal as men. An example would be woman in the military they want a certain job and cannot have it because they are not a man. To me a woman should not have to fight constantly for what she wants or be treated any different because she is a woman. If a woman can perform and hold her own she deserves to be equal to a man. Queen Boudica shows this is possible that you don’t have to hide in the shadows of a man. She was flogged and her daughters were raped but she did not let that change her until she got what she wanted which was to destroy the Romans for what they did. A woman like Queen Boudica is inspiring for how brave and determined she was.…

This is yet another question that attracts different perspectives, which, again cannot be judges due to the subjective nature of art.
