A Rare and Horrible Night
Nico
Austin
ENG-1A
18 March, 2013
A rare and horrible night Have you ever met some terrible thing like traffic jam or car accident on your way home, especially after a long day exhausted from school or work? In that situation you are eager to take a comfortable steaming hot shower and watch your favorite TV series such as Big Bang Theory, but, you are blocked off by something boring and troublesome. If you say “yes”, you do can image the feeling I have got. On a typical Tuesday night, after I got off my stressful volunteer work standing in the counter as a guide at the airport, I got on the bus with my iphone was playing the songs from the GRAMMY Nominees. At that moment, I would never expect a rare and horrible night was coming. Like the old days, I just looked outside the window, enjoying the night of Beijing, however, that night was totally opposite. It all seemed right until the bus stopped and some arguing voice flew into my ears. I took off my earphones, watching the mess in this narrow bus. “The rearview mirror was broken by the previous Audi car, but it fled. For the safety sake, I daren’t drive it anymore.” Driver persisted in his opinion no matter how eagerly passengers tried to persuade him. One of them yelled rudely as if he lost 500,000,000 dollars rather than just an accident while another woman asked the compensation for the delay of her business. It is not wise to dispute these boring, troublesome problems in this broken useless bus, so I got off without any hesitance. But I lost hope when there just cold aggressive wind, shut subway station and taxis without empty seats drove me crazy. Just when I was in such a helpless situation, something amazing happened: another bus from the airport was coming! It was like a life-saving straw when I was about to sliding from the cliff. God didn’t abandon me. I ran on the bus as quickly as I can as if it would disappear in a second. Thinking everything was finally alright, I was able to close my

The 1999 film, Office Space is contingent with both Marxist and Weberian theories in regards to the institution of work. In modern America, the general consensus regarding work is that it is a necessary evil—an obligation. Under the guidance of American capitalist ideology, the institution of work is not only a civic duty but a responsibility that society owes itself. Concepts from Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism have a constant presence in Mike Judge’s film. As such, the main characters react to their alienation and exploitation with micro-level Marxist acts of revolution. This is quite obviously a Marxist and Weberian comedy and there are many ways to analyze the influential concepts of both theorists in the film,…

Our trip started with a morning flight from Little Rock to Dallas. After a two-hour layover, we departed Dallas for San Francisco and arrived around 8:00 pm. A full day of flying, navigating airports, and finding a rental car wore us out. We didn’t even get a proper dinner the first night before we went to bed. The next morning, we decided to drive down…

Why do we watch TV? Is it the draw to live vicariously through the miraculously genius doctors on House? The lure towards the dangerous lives of FBI agents on Criminal Minds? The attraction towards something new, something we don’t have in our own lives? In Barbara Ehrenreich’s The Worst Years of our Lives, this is the question she asks. People on TV, she points out, are never seen watching TV themselves. Modern man has become a couch potato, part of a society that would rather watch a football game, faces full of junk food and soda, than actually play one, all to avoid getting sweaty, or tired, or because it’s painful. Maybe we watch TV because the people on the television are more interesting than we are. They’re definitely more active.…

Picture, title and sub-title: The headline is reversed-out of a colour picture of villagers apparently transporting straw bales in preparation for the eccentric “Olimpick” games celebrated in the Cotswold village of Chipping Campden. The use of the term “Olimpicks” would appear to be a deliberate archaisms – as it seems highly unlikely the Cotswold games were actually ever thus known. The strap byline attributes the story to a Mail staff reporter: “John Carter visits the village with its own eccentric games”.…

We asked ourselves and each other. Wandering through the crowd, we realized and came to the conclusion that we had arrived at a concert. As the music delighted us for about 20 minutes, we realized we still had to go the CN Tower, so we headed toward the exit and continued our journey. The CN Tower appeared to be nearby because it was so tall, but in reality it was a long way to go for us. By the time we had arrived CN Tower it was about 6 o’clock. We had finally arrived to our destination! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to go inside because the waiting was about 2-3 hours. We didn’t want to wait that long, and since we were so tired we sat down and took a…

I realized that I had stopped, finally. After looking around, I saw an old, shabby building being illuminated by the moonlight. I took the opportunity and sat against it, resting my legs for the first time in days. Nobody knew what time it was, all of the clocks were broken. Watches were for the rich, and if you stole one, it was always stolen again. And again and again and again and again and again until someone dies, as this world is a cruel reality for us. We are human, are we not?…

'My Busconductor' describes a day of the bus conductor's journey, whose life is soon going to end. It reminds readers that death is inevitable, and invites the readers to see life 'through new glasses'. The images of the bus conductor holding a ticket like a rose and put it into the bag like a child putting the shilling into the gas meter shows the bus conductor's attitudes towards the finite life, with the repetition in the last two lines 'one day he'll clock on and never clock off or clock off and never clock on' also emphasises the bus conductor's approach to the last stage of life.…

It was a red letter day in the history of my life, when I was put into a huge bag along with all my brothers and sisters and placed in a bus. We knew we would see the light of the day. Our grand careers were going to commence. We were on the threshold on a new life. Of course, for some time it was suffocating. But we did not mind. We knew our troubles were short lived and would come to an end very soon. We therefore suffered patiently ‘the mild yoke of God’.…

The only things we hear on the news lately are what country is getting bombed, who hates who, and the sheer number of people dying every day. There is too much discrimination, madness, and anger circulating through our world right now. We have soldiers dying every day for our country in a war that could be stopped with peaceful actions. Instead, we have become oblivious to what is going on around us. Music has always tried to make people more aware of today’s problems. Johnny Depp said, “Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t.” It has been the intention of singers and songwriters that mutual respect and understanding of our differences is the key to world peace.…

Once upon a time, under a sumac tree in Bingle Bog, a frog sang the night long, every night, in a horrendous voice. The forest animals were distraught and at their wits end. They tried stopping his crass ‘Minstrelling’ with sticks and stones, insults and bricks but to no avail. In sheer dismay they cried for divine intervention. To all this, the frog remained impassive and resolute, intent on airing his heart’s glad ‘elation.’…

When I woke up this morning, I glanced at my screen on my phone and the date read “January 19, 2013” in big bold letters. My cheeks started to burn and I immediately regretted waking up so early on such a horrible day. I rolled back over squeezing my eyes shut to try and force myself to fall asleep again but it was too late. My mind started to wander to January 19th four years ago; one of the worst days of my life. I was a freshman in high school and I hadn’t a worry in the world. I started to think back to the night before January 19, 2009, also the night before Martin Luther King Day, which meant no school the next day for the Bellevue West students. My boyfriend, Dan Gengel and I were snuggled together on the couch with our eyes glued to the movie “Pineapple Express.” His phone started to vibrate startling our concentration. He slowly answered the phone and put it on speaker. Benjamin Glovers voice pierced through the small speaker causing an instant smile to form on both of our faces. Ben had this nerdy voice he used to always use, “Hello Daniel, would you wish to take a journey around our lovely community under the moon light with John and I?” Dan laughed and his eyes shot towards me, and I knew this was his way of asking if I wanted to go drive around with Ben and John. I shook my head and snuggled in closer to him and pretended to sleep to show him I was comfortable and tired. As he told the boys he was tired and wanted to stay in I heard the disappointment in his voice. He hung up the phone and before I knew it we had both fallen asleep.…

Heart racing, scattered thoughts of a stressed mind, and fingers clicking a mile a minute; I’ve become unaware of the outside beauty of the world and consumed in my house studying for finals day after day, only living through a virtual world. I take my lanyard out from my worn backpack and jump into the car as I turn the keys into the ignition. The crisp sounding engine of my silver car brings a relief to my tensed body. My hometown is quaint and small, only taking at most ten minutes to travel across town. All I want is to relax and take a break from my disseminated mind so I decided to go to a family owned restaurant to grab coffee and a bagel. But first, I decide to take a few back roads with my windows rolled down, and my hair sailing in the wind as I take a moment to gather my thoughts. As soon as I arrived I was welcomed with an enormous amount of familiar faces, as usual, who greeted me. Ahh… I could almost feel the anxiousness melting off of me. The hostess happened to seat me at my favorite spot; a couch in the back of the restaurant. As I sat there, time passed so quickly as I closed my eyes and took a break from reality to enjoy my chocolate chip bagel and pumpkin spice latte…
