“I didn’t entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the school look like a museum, and that’s exactly what it was to me, and what I did not want it to be” (Knowles 9).
By the way this story is already narrated; I can tell that this man will be telling a story about his past. From what I know is that this story is taking place during World War II. Is he visiting a place he did not like to be during a teenager? Did something bad happen to him being at Devon School? How is the school more like a museum and not a school?
“What was I doing up here anyway? Why did I let Finny talk me into stupid things like this? Was he getting some kind of hold over me?” (Knowles 17).
Jumping off this tree is a sign of these boys courage. Anyone who doesn’t jump is labeled a coward, I suppose. But Finny…Finny is the leader of this group. Finny is fearless, leader of the pack. Anyone would do as Finny says because they want to be like him. Is Gene just trying to fit in? Is this really who Gene is? A leader?
Chapter Two:
“We were careless and wild, and I suppose we could be thought of as a sign of the life the war was being fought to preserve” (Knowles 24).
I think what Gene is saying that they want to have all the fun in the world before life takes a hold of them. After Devon school will they be enlisting into the war? Wanting to live their life now before the war lives theirs? Putting their life on the line for people they don’t even know? No one depends on them now, but once they enlist the lives of everyone in their city, state, country, and maybe even world be on their shoulders. Will they be able to handle the stress of everyone’s lives on their decisions?
“”The first person who says anything unpleasant will get a swift kick in the ass…”” (Knowles 30)
Finny is the prominent leader in this group. Everyone takes orders fro him. Does Gene ever get tired of being ordered around? Will someone rebel? Maybe Finny will finally stop
