A Significant Experience That Changed Your Life.
I had my life set. At the age of 15 I had no worries, no qualms about life. My daily routine comprised of going to school, coming home, resting for a while, waking up, going out with friends, coming back home, sleeping, and then repeating the same thing the next day. I didn't care about my homework, or even classwork for that matter. Why?

My dad. He was the shelter to my 'whatever-who-cares' lifestyle. He gave me designer clothing, watches and accesories more expensive than many of my classmate's whole attire, an extremely comfortable and stylish ride to go to school with- i had everything. To my 15 year old brain it was all that mattered, and my 15 year old brain knew that even if it never studied, the person whose it was, could enjoy a lavish fun life anyways.

But then, life happened as i woke from the dream.

My dad's business suffered a loss of such a humongous extent that I dropped abysmally from being a prince to well being a regular person. At that time I was angry, furious and extremely cross at my dad for not being able to handle this catastrophe. But now I know that it was the greates blessing of my life, it was a blessing that turned me from 'uber cool rich prince' to 'Afnan Bin Helal'- a title that defineltely suits me better.

So, as the 15 year old snob was grumbling over why his dad suffered a loss his dad had fell sick, so sick that he couldn't even attend office anymore, so sick that the 15 year old self realized that the dad he was angry at may even not be there. That is when he realized that money is a miniscule matter, it gives weight to the life you live, but the substance in life comes from much greater things than that. Much greater things that even the richest may not have, but the poorest may have billions of!

Family, friends and their love, their existence.

The 15 year old snob was me. The day I realized this important lesson, my dad called me to his room to have a one on one talk to his most loved but most spoilt son. I

As I grew up my father was gone about six months out of the year, serving as a sailor in the United States Navy. Growing up all I wanted was to be more and more like my father. He would to tell me stories about some of the training missions that he went on, about how he and his unit would play war games with the Navy seals. He would tell me stories about some of the actual missions he was on, some of the places he had been, and some of the things that he had seen. The one thing that he never told me was how the military changed his life. Little did I know that beginning on September 16, 2002 my life would begin to change forever.…

Throughout life, the obstacles we face and overcome leave a lasting impact on our lives. The summer before my freshman year of highschool, I lost myself facing one of my greatest obstacles when my father left my mom, two brothers, and myself. His absence brought a stage of confusion and sadness upon my life. Throughout my childhood, my father and I were inseparable. He was my role model and the one person I could always count on and turn to.…

    Life Changing Events

When people talk about life changing events, they usually talk about families’ death or certain path they took, which shaped their life. Just like any other people, one of my close friends mother, who is originally from Nepal has experienced such life changing events such as leaving their home country behind for better opportunities for themselves or their loved ones, which not only changed her, but also changed the way she anticipated her life to be. When my friends’ mother left her country Nepal, she did not only leave the country itself, but also had to leave her relatives behind. Migrating from home country to another must have been hard because of language and culture barrier. I admire the step she took because it’s tough to move from a place you grew up at down to a whole new country. It must have been hard for her to make such life changing decision, but she did it anyways because she knew if she migrates from Nepal to United States, her children would have better opportunities in life. She has inspired me to be strong. She motivates me no matter what decision I make, I have to stick with it 100% and give my best at it because wherever I go or whatever I do, life will move with me. It’s my choice to either make the most of it or slouch back and cry about it. My friend’s mom is someone who I really admire. She has been through so much and she stayed strong throughout everything. I know for a fact that I will have a life changing experience just like my friends mother because in Indian traditions, we always have to migrate away from parents to go move in with the husband’s side of the family. So this would be a life changing event due to all the moving away from family. It’s hard phase of life. My other best friend had a life changing experience about her divorced parents. This was a really devastating time of her childhood. She told me that about four years ago, she had a life ‘makeover’. It was the day her parents decided to get divorced. She was fifteen…

Throughout our lives, everyone has had to face difficulties and challenges. While these obstacles are unpleasant, they shape us into who we are today. One of the first obstacles that I had to overcome came in the form of a boy named Jeremy. I met Jeremy when I was in the first grade. The two of us had manage to become close friends. He was my first best friend. Coincidentally, we found out that we actually lived very close to each other. Since our houses were so conveniently close, we often visited each other. The two of us did everything together. Jeremy was the leader between us. He would be the one to come up with the games we played. I was just happy to hang out with him. I thought the two of would be friends for life, however it was not meant to be.…

“Two years ago I went to summer camp for Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot children. When I told my best friend about it she laughed at me, so I didn’t want to go. But my daddy said I had to go and see for myself what it was like. I went there expecting to see monsters and instead I saw children just like me. We played games and told jokes. We had the same hobbies and our grandmothers cooked the same kind of food. I was amazed. That was when I realized that Turkish-Cypriots are the same as us. It was silly of me to be afraid to come. I told my best friend about how nice the Turkish-Cypriot children were, but she didn’t believe me. May she should go to a camp too so that she can see what I saw. I have Turkish-Cypriot friends now. I gave them my email so that we can talk on msn. I wish I could see those friends everyday.”…

A new house, new school, and a completely new atmosphere were ahead of my nine-year-old life. I had lived in the same house for what it seemed like forever and had attended the same school since first grade. I knew everyone. From January to December, my calendars were filled with birthday parties I had to attend. Performing in talent shows with my best friends Dezerey, Jasmine, and Nykchasia were a yearly activity at Garden Valley Elementary School. The Robinson Center's summer camp was mandatory for my big sister, Breonna, and me. I was used to familiarities like the Chihuahua that ran to the front of its gate and barked every time I rode past it on my sleek, black rollerblades. Those rollerblades made me feel untouchable, at ease and confident until I had to ride them in a new area, surrounded by new, unfamiliar people.…

I can’t say that there was a particular event that had a major impact in my life, but I can say I will forever treasure the experience that I have gained through my military service in the Navy. Joining the military in any branch, but particularly the Navy, is an experience that I feel everyone should have even if it’s just for a standard four year term. Over the course of my four years of service, I can definitely say without a doubt that it had a major impact in shaping the direction of my life.…
