Throughout our lives, everyone has had to face difficulties and challenges. While these obstacles are unpleasant, they shape us into who we are today. One of the first obstacles that I had to overcome came in the form of a boy named Jeremy. I met Jeremy when I was in the first grade. The two of us had manage to become close friends. He was my first best friend. Coincidentally, we found out that we actually lived very close to each other. Since our houses were so conveniently close, we often visited each other. The two of us did everything together. Jeremy was the leader between us. He would be the one to come up with the games we played. I was just happy to hang out with him. When I was younger, I typically received the things I wanted, things such as toys – being that I was an only child – and never worried about hearing the answer, “No”. I had this insane idea that the world revolved around me. Although I still had the concept in my head, that it was all about me when I was informed I would be an older sister, I knew that nothing would be the same. Before I was a sister, I never took anyone else into consideration, and I was never told to do otherwise. I was around four years old, when this news has changed my life forever.…

The doctors suggested checking my glucose levels, and with a single finger prick, the machine displayed ominous letters: 'HHH' (immensely high). I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. What followed was an extremely grueling two weeks of treatment and recovery.…
