Larson uses to figurative language to depict how addicting the fair was for the people nation-wide. His metaphor comparing its enticing nature to being cast “under a spell” gives the reader an idea of how captivating the environment was. Being kept under a spell is typically associated with something being inescapable, furthermore explaining Larson’s purpose of why everyone seemed to attend the fair despite the number of people disappearing continuing to increase.…
To prepare for the Carnival they make festival eggs to decorate and sell. They also set up booths.…
Fairs lure people in through the gates with bright lights, loud buzzers, and exhilarating games. These same tactics help to attract tourists to New York City. Like a kid at a fair, Didion becomes enticed by such distractions and cannot draw herself away from her fair, the city. Her outlook on this new city is parallel with a child's viewpoint of his/her experience at a fair, for the first time. She states, "New York was no mere city. It was instead and infinitely romantic notion, the mysterious nexus of all love and money and power, the shining and perishable dream itself" (p.684). Another example of this metaphor comes when she describes the smells of the city. Any kid could recognize the scent of fried dough, and most would immediately associate the smell with the cloud of scent that looms over fair grounds. The bright lights of "fair-like" New York City snatch Didion's attention. She describes the view from her office window and admits, " the lights that alternately spelled out TIME and LIFE above Rockefeller Plaza; that pleased me obscurely." Didion can be viewed as easily distracted or easily amused. Either way, she acts like a child around the pinball machine at the fair.…
2. Clearly there were many motives that drove Chicago to build the world fair. Civic honor is probably the most prominent of these motives as well as wanting to be as good as other monumental cities such as New York- they wanted to prove themselves. Chicago wanted to be respected as much as possible. Chicago proving that it was more than a meat packing backwater showed how they could push through difficult times to gain honor which is problematic in this situation.…
When choosing a certain path, one must understand that along with that decision, there come consequences. In Ludwig’s Tieck’s tale “Eckbert the Fair, ” it is clear that the characters are being punished for their personal actions. The supernatural forces in this fairy tale, simply laid out challenges for the characters to see if they would follow the right path. Like everyone else, Bertha and Eckbert had come across decisions in their life, where they were able to understand the difference between picking the right from wrong choice. By deciding to go against their self-conscious, and making the wrong choices, Bertha and Eckbert meet a tragic fate. This tale is haunted by supernatural and psychological forces, which greatly influence the choices these character make.…
Sarah decided to see the fair, and I walked with her, eager to flood my senses with the unusual. We casually strolled outside only to feel a bit of moist falling upon us. However, the rain didn't stop our tour. We stumbled through stands upon stands. Most vendors sold the same thing- funnel cake and corn dogs and lemonade. Few adventurous minds dared to invent oddities- fried strawberries, fried pork chops, ice cream on a stick and the like. I was confronted with the fact that most of the owners, or operators, of the stands looked a little gruesome. They appeared to be homely, rugged, even criminal; very appealing for the interested buyer. Before I could unrightfully judge the fair workers any further, the sky let loose. Big droplets of rain barreled down upon our heads and we ran for shelter. Sarah and I clung to the side of a booth with a vinyl roof, safe from the rain. The smell radiating from that food booth make my stomach groan. The downpour happening from outside our wall of safety grew more intense and terrifying. I took this as an opportunity to converse with Sarah. She admitted her thoughts on the fair too. "I honestly hate the carnival part of the fair" she muttered with utter disgust, "It's filled with raunchy people who pressure you into playing their rigged game, or ride their unexciting rides." The roaring rain shower decided to die down so we attempted to walk outside again. We soon got news that all the rides were shut down so we took that as a sign to leave. I thanked Sarah for this fun afternoon. All in all, it was a good…

Six Months ago, on a hot humid day my friend Mike and I decided to go to the Texas State Fair. When we first arrived all I could smell was the great barbecue from the Grill. We then decided to walk around and find something to eat until we ran across a snack shack where I got some bacon cheese fries and he got a cheeseburger. The bacon cheese fries were so good they were crispy and cheesy with a hint of smoked bacon to top it off. Finally, I briefly overlooked onto each booth trying to decide which one had the best prizes. Until I decided with the balloons dart game. Somehow I managed to get lucky and won a huge stuffed teddy bear. After playing the game,we then decided to visit the petting zoo; there were chickens, horses, and camels. There…
In short, the World’s Fair was a pastime that brought many different cultures together to learn and educate themselves regarding the latest technology and innovation that had unlimited possibilities. This weekend I went to the Kansas, State Fair! I took my best friend Tori Foust. I have took her since the third grade since my brother started college when I was in second grade, so I had no one to go on rides with. When we arrived at the fair we went straight to the stables. While we were at the stables we saw a girl who looked about eight or nine years old. She was walking a beautiful tan horse with a white pattern! She asked if we would like to pet her horse, and of course we said yes. After the stables we went started to go on rides! My very favorite ride was the Star ship! The star ship is closed off it you stand in front of a padded board with wheels underneath it. It starts to spin really fast, so the board goes up and down with you…
To start off the day I had to go clean up at the fairgrounds. When people show an animal in the fair that is also sold everyone has to get up super early to “do your duty”. The only reason the kids have to do this is so they can get their check. It's usually not so bad but this time it was different. The rain seemed to be never ending. The pavilion was crammed with all kinds of people trying to stay dry. Unlike everyone else i was one of the few who decided to help so i could get my check and go on my way. My job was to carry these grey metal chairs out of this soping wet trailer. Now on any other day i would have loved to “play” in the rain, but i was wearing athletic shorts, boots, and an old t-shirt, and it was windy. When i finally sat down and decided i was done and it was one of the…
With events in the city every other day, there is never a dull moment. Parades, festivals, concerts and other countless social gatherings, bring everyone together with only one purpose; to have a good time. And how does this bring out the quirkiness of the city? Everything has a theme. Whether it be food, music or charity, people will socialize for any occasion. VooDoo Fest is solely music centered, whereas the Crawfish Fest is all about food. There are also countless breast cancer walks throughout the month of October and countless little neighborhood fairs throughout the whole year. But one important aspect found in every event is…
This year in the beginning of August My family and I went to Springfield IL. for the Illinois State Fair. We were going to show our excellent show pigs. When we got there it was about 10:00 P.M, and it took us about thirty minute to set everything up and get the pigs in their pens.(compound sentence) When my family and I were heading home, we stopped at Casey’s. I got Prarie Farms chocolate milk and Chewy Sprees. The we began our hour ride home, and I was looking forward to the next day.(Compound sentence)…
I have always been weirdly amused by carnivals. It’s interesting to watch all of the eagerly excited young kids waiting in line for their favorite rides and for their favorite foods. It reminds me of when I was little. Still to this day, an amusement park gives me a rush that I can’t receive from anywhere else. It’s the excitement and the thrill that makes me want to come back for more.…
A trip to the Alabama National Fair usually is an excursion that almost anyone looks forward to, no matter what their age may be. As my friends and I met up to head to the fair, we were all ecstatic concerning all the phenomenal fair food we planned to eat once we arrived. We all discussed the wonderful stuff we planned to accomplish when we arrived at the fair. My friends and I were thrilled regarding the multitude of astounding rides we planned to ride once we reached the fair. As we approached the fairgrounds, we could see the historic Montgomery Coliseum off in the distance. When we caught sight of the coliseum, we all knew we had almost reached our journey’s destination.…
