Religion is one of the most debatable and controversial topics in existence so it is unsurprisingly the cause of many conflicts when it interferes with the way a government acts. It's impact is so strong that it has had the power to split countries into two. For example the state formally known as British India split up into two separate republics, India and Pakistan. The reasoning behind this was that the two main religions (Hinduism and Islam) could not function together in government and this led to their separation. Although later on the issue turned to the region known as Kashmir. India and Pakistan are not the only case of a county splitting up, nearly the same situation happened in Sudan where a country split up into two parts, one Islam and the other not. As opposed to the Indo-Pakistani war, the Sudan civil war continues to this day. Religion involvement in government leads to the division of nations and a divided nation is a weak nation.
A wide variety of reasons can lead to the persecution of minorities, the most common being a group's religion or beliefs. Those who think that this source of persecution has disappeared are mistaken. Only recently, members of the Baha'i faith have been jailed for their beliefs in Iran ,where the government is heavily influenced by Muslim (Shiite) beliefs and law. Another more extreme example of the ongoing persecution of religious minorities is the North Korean government's execution of Christians (who make up less than 2% of the population) with North Korea being a largely atheist country. These are but a few of countless examples of government persecution of minorities based on religious grounds.
