1. In Eudora Welty’s "A Worn Path”, Phoenix's journey a quest in quite a few ways. Firstly because of her appearance “she was very old and small and walked slowly in the dark pine shadows” (Welty 461). It is because of her age and how fragile she seems to be, this would make moving in an enormous forest very difficult for someone who wasn’t as fit as they once was. Phoenix’s environment played a part in her journey that were obstacles that were trying to prevent her from going to the clinic where the medicine where her grandson resided every year. The people as well as the terrain that Phoenix came across also were an obstacle to her. The first, the hunter who dared “laughed and lifted his gun and pointed it at Phoenix” (464) as an attempt to scare her from her journey. However even when death stared her in the eye, she did not let on about whether or not she was frightened instead opting to be more courageous than most. The last obstacle she faced was the old receptionist who wasn’t the nicest of folks in the town. She called Phoenix “A charity case” (465) and even asked “Are you deaf?”(465) when it was apparent that Phoenix was neither. Phoenix accomplished an amazing feat by traveling a great distance to provide treatment for the one she loved, which isn’t always the easiest thing to do.
2. In Eudora Welty’s "A Worn Path”, because of Phoenix’s age, she has more problems with her eyesight, which sometimes hindered her on her trip. The first occurred when she was trying to cross the log, for she “mounted the log and shut her eyes” (Welty 462), as if she didn’t quite trust what she was seeing or doing. The next instance occurred when she was in town when she was on her way to the clinic. She knew her eyesight was failing her and instead “depended on her feet to know where to take her” (465). This knowledge about her weaknesses in reality make her aware of herself and allows her to move past them in order to ensure
