Aa Meeting Essay Example
The AA meeting that I attended was at midnight in Bay City, at the Log Cabin. When I first walked in I was very startled. There were three women and seven men. I was quite overwhelmed and a tad bit scared to be in that sort of predicament. I know going at midnight was probably not the best idea, but it was the only meeting that fit into my schedule. Everyone was very nice to me when I walked in and informed me on how the meeting was held and what went on. At the start of the meeting some book readings were read off and they all said the serenity prayer. As everyone went around the room and talked about how alcohol affected their lives and how now that they were trying to be sober, I sat there and listened. A hand full of the people there did not share any stories or advice, they just said their names and that they were alcoholics and that they were just at the meeting to listen, not to share anything. A lot of the men told stories about how alcohol affected their personal and professional live. Something that really threw me off was that three of the men there all had degrees from universities.
When I think of an alcoholic I think of someone walking down the street in ragged clothes with a brown paper bag holding a bottle of the cheapest beer or booze on the shelf. But that’s not the case. These men were dressed in jeans and nice jackets, work boots and they appeared clean and shaved. I sympathized with the one man when he shared a story about how alcohol had changed his appearance and attitude so much that his toddler didn’t even recognize him. Many of the men that spoke talked about the amounts of alcohol they consumed everyday on a daily basis. The one guy said that he would buy a half gallon of vodka in the morning and a thirty pack of beer at night. I was floored by this. He talked about how his organs were starting to shut down and that was when he realized that he had to make a change. All of the people that spoke had one thing in common, and that was

    Summary of AA Meeting

I decided to attend a meeting based first (and almost solely) on convenience of the location. So I decided to attend a meeting right here in Batavia. The “Batavia 12 & 12” at the Holy Trinity Church down on 6th & Wood St. They hold meeting on Mondays around 11:00am. The main focus is to follow the 12 steps in order and work on them in a more traditional fashion. They do have the big book, but follow it more in a step by step focus. However karma decided to rear its head and make it a Closed Meeting, meaning that it is not as open to the public to sit on and they only allow members who are coming with a problem related to alcohol. So at first I was turned away but, I was lucky enough to know a person (local firefighter) who attends the church, and talked the host into letting me sit in on a meeting. So with the awkwardness of getting into the door out of the way, it was time for the meeting.…

My second group observation called Hope Seekers Group, Initiated with the facilitator Nadine introducing the new members that were joining for the first time. Nadine started by reading the declaration of Unity. “This we owe to A.A.’s future to place our common welfare first; to keep our fellowship united. For on A.A. unity depend our lives, and the lives of those to come.” She also advised the new comers that they were responsible for seeking help if they ever felt the need to drink and to consult with a sponsor for support during their struggles. During the meeting the members alongside Nadine were also celebrating one year of sobriety for a member named Cassandra. Cassandra was asked to share her story with the group and the newcomers, with…

My first experience at an alcoholics anonymous meeting was very interesting and in a way uplifting. The meeting I attended took place in Philadelphia Miss at 208 Range Ave. at 7:30 p.m. in the evening. Alcoholics Anonymous is an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. AA states that its “primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety”. The only membership requirement is to stop drinking and to carry its message to the alcoholic who suffers. There were 20 people excluding myself and two others. Among the 17 people there were seven women and ten men. The ages range from around 20-60. Of the 17 people there, there were little to no diversity within the group. Prior to the meeting I was expecting to enter into a room filled with smoke and nervous, agitated people. My impression of AA and of alcoholics mostly came from my own prior experience with population suffering from different psychiatric disorders. I was expecting a lot of smoking, coffee drinking, twitching and general nervous behaviors. Something that really threw me off was that there were people there with degrees from universities. When I think about alcoholics I think of someone walking down the street in ragged clothes, but to my surprise the meeting mostly was attended by normal appearance people that I would never suspect of having any addition problems. The people were very calm, cool and collected. The meeting started with the serenity prayer followed by the 12 steps, 12 traditions. Then they allowed people who were new or if it was their first meeting to introduce themselves and tell their story to the fight of addiction related to alcohol. Many talked about God and how he delivered them from drinking. I sympathized with one lady (Christy) a Registered nurse when she shared her story about how alcohol and drugs ruined her career. By sharing their stories I found that to be a very positive thing to do. It…

I enjoyed the stories that were shared and the support of all the people in the room being so respectful and listening. I also enjoyed the prayer at the end. I didn’t like when everyone had to admit aloud that they were alcoholic ( I get that it’s part of the 12 steps but it seemed like they had already admitted it to themselves because they were there) I also didn’t like the environment that the meeting was held in. It seemed like it could’ve been held in someplace outside that was relaxing or maybe in a church to connect spiritually but it was just in a business room. However I will say that even if the room could’ve been full of total first timers or strangers, they had this amazing and supportive energy that just filled the room. I loved watching these people connect , grow, and heal over a tragedy that took over their life It was also amazing and empowering to see them make the step the give themselves and the people they love a better future.…

On Sunday, March 6th, I went to an AA meeting in the Heights Vietnam Veterans Memorial Building between Manhattan and Summit Avenues in NJ, Jersey City. The meeting started around 10:30 AM and ended around 11:30 AM. Before the meeting, lots of coffee, tea and donuts were served to the people. There were about 50 people that showed up to the meeting, 35 of them were males and the other 15 were females. Most of them were either old or middle aged. The meeting consisted of a podium which had about five rows of metal folding chairs facing it. On the wall behind the podium to the left of it, was a list of the twelve steps and to the right of it, was a list of the twelve traditions. The meeting began with someone reciting the twelve steps and then with the introduction of new members. After that someone else comes up to the podium, but this time with a calendar in his hands and he goes over the upcoming events. The meeting ended with everyone quietly listening to Billy’s and George’s life stories.…

I went to an early morning meeting and was welcomed with open arms by every person there. Several people came up and introduced themselves and offered me coffee and doughnuts. As each person came up to the podium, they stated not only their name, but also that they were an alcoholic. After the…

When people think of substance abuse they think of cocaine, heroin, or even something horrible worse however, what gets vastly overlooked is having an abuse to drinking alcohol. As it was stated in the textbook and the review PowerPoint 70 million people suffer from alcohol dependency. Alcoholic dependence is very dangerous and life threating, but luckily there is help for this substance abuse as well. Just like in the USA countries around the world have help called alcoholics Anonymous or also known as AA meetings. Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship for men and women who may share their experiences with alcohol in hopes of trying to get better from their alcohol dependency. It is a positive treatment that comes from different…

The meeting began with some readings. I read on the AA Promises which I thought was a waste of time. In my opinion I felt like they should have left the readings for you to read to yourself because the meetings are on a time frame and people seem to have a lot of other important issues to talk about and be concerned with other than reading the same readings every time.…

There was a lot of chatter in the room. People were talking about their past week and common ground between each other. The atmosphere of the room wasn’t as gloomy as when I attended the AA meeting. The people who were chatting the most looked like they might attend the Al-anon meetings regularly. The room I walked in looked like a lunch room with chairs and tables set up. The meeting started with a Serenity Prayer, which was similar to how my AA meeting started. Once again, like my AA meeting, it was explained to everyone that this was an Open meeting and no one was required to talk.…

Including myself, there were only four people at the meeting. Due to the small number of people, and that one of the people in attendance was a friend from class, I had the opportunity to discuss Al-Anon in depth with the other two attendees. They were a husband-and-wife that had been running the group for many years. They started going to Al-Anon because of their son was an alcoholic and continued to go even after he got sober. Al-Anon is ran similarly to AA.…

I was a little nervous attending one of these meetings because I didn’t know what to expect but only know from television shows and movies. What is the reality though? I imagined and painted a picture of what an AA meeting would be like. I pictured a room full of people that were obvious addicts, unkept appearances, offensive hygiene and at least one person smelling of alcohol while moving back and forth in the chair. As I entered the room, my perspective laughed at me and as I looked around I was deceived. It was the complete opposite, most of the members of the group were clean, well-kept and looked healthy. I have never been a room full of worried people trying to stay sober because they started the road to sobriety. To keep their…
