Love is Love, Same Sex or Opposite Sex A big issue in today’s society is whether same sex couples have the same rights as opposite sex couples. The biggest concern is the right to marriage and currently, according to the Human Rights Campaign’s website, about 11 out of 50 states have generated laws that permit same sex marriage in that certain state. Same sex marriage is recognized by that state but not by the federal government and the movement towards same sex marriage, is aiming for the approval from the federal government. Same sex marriage should become a right protected under the constitution, whose place is it to say whether a man and a man, or a woman and a woman cannot be legally married? If you take two x-rays of a man and woman and put them side by side, unless you’re a doctor or an archaeologist you cannot tell them apart and that goes to show that underneath it all, we are all the same regardless of race, ethnicity and gender. Therefore, we should all have the same rights whether homosexual or heterosexual. Catholics and Christians alike do not believe in same sex marriages. Their religions do not allow for such things to be even considered as a constitutional right, and their beliefs also play a part in politics. “God has staged an unprecedented revival, and religions that invest in his word on sex and related matters have a tenacious hold on the politics of certain liberal constitutional democracies.” (Denike 2) This meaning that the religious ideas of same sex marriage as being unholy are entering the world of politics and as many people like myself believe, religion and politics should be kept separate because not everyone practices Christianity or Catholicism, some people chose to be atheists and practice no religion at all. Just because God says it is unholy for same sex

Death is such a hard feeling to describe. How can you possibly describe the feelings of loss and emptiness? Unless you have experienced this yourself you cannot truly understand. Because John Updike’s poem “Dog’s Death” (1953), also speaks of the loss of a family member, his beloved dog, I lost my Dog to death and he was part of my family, one of my children.…

Throughout the course of American history, every generation has built upon the foundations of freedom that were constructed by their ancestors before them. During the 1920’s, women finally earned the right to vote, and in the 1960’s, blacks finally gained their hard fought equality. Our current generations task, is to strive to obtain equal rights for homosexuals so that our children and grandchildren can live in a world where they can feel free to express themselves without the fear of discrimination and hatred based chiefly on their biological predisposition to be attracted to the same gender, and so that our grandchildren will one day look at the argument against same sex marriage as we do misogyny and racism; an argument based upon ignorance, and fear. When woman were granted the right to vote, it did not alter the process of voting, and when blacks were recognized as equals, it did not threaten the equality of any other man, woman, or child. These rights awarded to women and blacks simply gave them the privileges promised to them by our nation’s forefathers. The gay community’s quest to gain these aforementioned privileges is currently being obstructed by conservative pundits who believe that the love between a man and another man, or a woman and another woman, is not adequate enough to be legally recognized, although heterosexual marriage is. William J. Bennett, former Secretary of Education under Ronald Reagan, author of several books that delve into the virtues and morals of Americans, and a former senior editor of the conservative journal, National Review, is one of those advocates against gay marriage. In Bennett’s opinion editorial which was published in the Washington Post entitled, “Against Gay Marriage”, he argues that legislation regarding the legalization of gay marriage should not be ratified because allowing marriage between homosexuals essentially…

The first reason why same sex marriage should be legal is because it is fair for all individuals to have the same rights in society. With the end of sodomy laws, a recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, conservatives have lost their last excuse to write off gay lives and love as unworthy of social accommodation. But whatever ones feel about the reasoning of the decision, its results is clear: gay Americans are no longer criminals. Even if they were, as murderers on death row that have the constitutional right to marriage, they should have too. Marriage is a very sacred arrangement. It is a lifetime commitment said to be only between man and woman. These two people should love or be in love with each other. Over the years homosexuality has come to the forefront. The question of should homosexuals be allowed to marry each other has had the world in an uproar. Homosexuals, indeed should be able to marry each other with the same benefits as man and woman. Homosexual marriages was made legal for the first time in 2001 by the Netherlands. Canada was the first country to marry Homosexual couples from all nations to formally commit. Extending recognition to non traditional relationships is not an attempt to undermine the family. But rather an effort to recognize today’s realities and to end decimation.…

When asked if one believes in equal rights for all citizens, the typical, rote response is a resounding “Yes”. If the question becomes more specific as to include the right for homosexuals to marry, a hesitation follows. The concept of gay marriage is far deeper a societal problem for most because its roots lie in prejudicial perspectives that have permeated us for years. Before the fight for the right to marry, the gay community has long endured simply the right to exist openly without feeling pariah-like.…

Even though in the U.S. Constitution it does not specify anything about marriage whether it is homosexual or heterosexual, the constitution was designed to ensure that a federal government was established and to ensure equal rights to all citizens of the nation. In 1996 the Federal Defense of Marriage Act prevented any states from legalizing gay marriage however that was proven to be unconstitutional because it restricts the states to define marriage and prohibits gay couples the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples. (Lavoie, 2012 Gay Marriage Law…) This all boils down to one underlying statement that many gay rights activist are battling for every day and that is that denying homosexuals the equal right to marry just as their heterosexual counterpart has the right to marry his or her significant other, is unconstitutional discrimination and that by prohibiting such an act to a certain group of people is not only in…

Some are against it due to religion, or the way they were brought up, I feel everyone is entitled to their opinion but they should keep an open mind. Like I said, the world is changing and you don’t have to accept it but you should learn to live with it without discriminating or putting them down.…

Gay marriages have been one of the hottest and controversial topics in our society. There are still problems concerning this issue of homosexuality and gay marriages. Same sex marriages are legal in Hawaii, but in all other states couples must be of the opposite sex to form a marriage. Hawaii’s decision to legalize same sex marriages is considered a milestone victory for gays and may cause a ripple affect for similar action in other states. Those who support gay marriages justify their position by the concept of love. These supporters of gay marriages feel as though gay people are being deprived of their right to love. Many people believe that gay people deserve the right to love and to take that love and form a marriage. These people believe that gays want to feel justified, meaning that as a couple they should be able to define their own marriage for themselves and make their own set of rules. Supports of same-sex marriages feel as though homosexuals are being deprived of their God given right to get married. They believe that arguments against same sex marriages are unconstitutional, and they simply do not justify a ban on same sex marriages. It is not the idea of two people of the same sex getting married that frightens people so much, but it is the thought of change and the fact that the federal government will redefine marriage to allow same sex unions. When people picture the results of same sex marriages, they see images of unstable homes. Everyone would probably agree that homosexuality has changed our society, and legalizing same sex marriages is not likely to be an exception. It would be an injustice to discriminate against a person if he or she were…

Those are marriages are strictly between a man and a woman and marriage is a privilege, not a right. In bible it is often quotes that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. So in the case of Baker v. Nelson, the Supreme Court of Minnesota found that “the institution of marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children within an family is as old as the book of Genesis” (Gay Marriage - ProCon.org). So two couple of the same sex getting married is contradictory to that belief. Many Christian believers believe that it is morally wrong to allow same-sex marriage. These can be attributed to religious texts. Oppose group of marriage equality believe that marriage is a privilege and not a right. The classes that are protect under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 include “(1) a history of longstanding, widespread discrimination, (2) economic disadvantage, and (3) immutable characteristics… ‘Sexual Orientation’ does not meet any of the three objective criteria shared by the historically protected civil rights categories” (Gay Mariage – ProCon.org). Same-sex marriage contradicts nature. Two people of the same sex will never be able to marry because it is biologically…

Gay marriage and religion go hand and hand with each other. Religion is one of the main reasons that people are having a debate over gay marriage. In the United States, there is social unrest regarding the government’s denial of the right to marry for homosexuals. Plenty of conservatives are completely against gay marriage; and many of liberals are fighting for equal treatment. The neo-Christian politicians are using religious arguments to establish that homosexuality is an abomination. Clearly we as a nation are undecided on this issue. 36 states have passed legislation banning gay marriages, yet the state of Vermont passed a law that allows homosexual couples the right to participate in civil unions. Some other states are also debating whether or not to allow these couples to marry. Unfortunately, the dispute has left the United States homosexual community in an awkward position. Gays who gain the same benefits from marriage would be a more productive part of society for two reasons: the benefits from marriage and the pursuit of happiness obtained from the right of gay marriage. Many gays disagree with the argument that marriage is a tradition. They believe we should not discriminate who may be married. It is clear where gays stand. They do not want to settle for less than marriage status.…

You walk into class and see "pop quiz" written on the board. Everyone sits down and the bell rings for class to begin. The teacher makes an announcement and says 'everyone that is failing my class does not have to take this quiz everyone else grab your pencils.' How do the rest of you feel? How is that fair? How does a grade make me different from the other people? You probably feel discriminated. How does a grade decipher what I get and don't get in life? So how should a gender decipher who you can and can't get married too? Same sex marriage has been illegal in many states for awhile now. Very few states have legalized it. Many many people believe it is not right. Then you have the other people that believe gender should not matter. You love who you love.…

As of November 20, 2014, same –sex marriage has been legalized in 35 out of 50 U.S. states. Same-sex marriage is a hot topic which the Supreme Court is considering to legalize. Many people say a homosexual person is a sinner. The question is do homosexual people choose his or her gender? They were born that way and they are happy with their lives. Homosexual people are nothing unlike heterosexual people. They are living, they are working, and they contribute to society. Proponents state that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. On the other side, opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery downhill way that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages (gaymarriage.procon.org). All people in the world should understand the meaning of marriage, whether a same-sex marriage or a traditional marriage. For that reason, same-sex marriage should be considered as a legal marriage because it is an equal right for humankind and beneficial for society as well as preventing youth suicide.…

The issue of gay marriage has been a long-standing issue that has plagued our society worldwide. With the same fire as ethnic equality issues brought during the civil rights movement, gay marriage has brought similar attitudes our of current generations. Opponents of gay marriage claim that it would destroy the foundation and meaning of traditional marriage and family and that it would lead to polygamy and a growth in sexually transmitted disease. I believe that gay marriage is a right that should be afforded to all individuals, as it would help the local and state governments, change traditional family values for the better, and for the mere fact that it is a right protected and often overlooked by the constitution.…
