Baja California History
Spanish Conquistador, Hernán Cortés, obtained "Santa Cruz Island"(Modern Baja California), for Spain in 1535. Later Spanish explorer, Francisco de Ulloa, under the commission of Hernán Cortés, surveyed the west coast of modern Mexico and Baja California Peninsula, leading to the belief in an Island of California. Portuguese surveyor, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, was the first to explore the California coast, traveling from San Diego to Pt. Reyes in 1542; he too believed in an Island of California. “Island of California,” Spanish East Indies, Spanish West Indies, part of South America, and most of North America, became New Spain territories. The Island of California had no wealth, no advanced Indian civilization, no agriculture, no pottery, no domesticated animals (except dogs), and no Northwest Passage (leading to), so Spain was disinterested in it. Later in 1579, Sir Francis Drake discovered New Albion (Nova Albion) north of New Spain, where a harbor, now Drakes Bay, stood, but the English too, were uninterested. In 1602, Sebastián Vizcaíno's mapping of coastal California, led to the naming San Diego, Catalina Island, and Santa Barbara. He brought interest to Monterey, California, as a suitable settlement and port to anchor, but ultimately, did not occur. California was a small isolated province and had no outside trade with foreigners. It was not until, British Captain James Cook’s third voyage in 1778, where not only the Northwest United States was mapped, but otter skins were acquired. After Cook’s death, the men traded with the Chinese and revealed that otter skins made a large profit. Word reached not only England, but also U.S., France, and Russia. This was the beginning of the California Fur Rush.

Illegally Americans, Russians, and British traders started trading hides and tallow for sea otters with Spanish owned California and the Spanish used tariffs to fund their government. As early as 1787, Americans sent ships to hunt sea otter, which helped the

This time, King Francis I sent yet another Italian, Giovanni da Verrazano from Florence, in 1524 to make a try. He first made landfall a little north of where the Spanish had settled in St. Augustine. He then sailed north along the Atlantic coast before returning to France. Though Verrazano failed in his stated objective—for the simple reason that no such passage exists at the latitudes where he was looking—he did find that the newly discovered land mass was continuous for quite a long distance.…

This article talks about who John Cabot was and the discovery that he made. The first European to arrive in North America that was documented, who sailed for a British king was Giovanni Caboto later known as John Cabot. King Henry VII sent out Cabot to see what he could find to keep up with the Spaniards who sent out Christopher Columbus. Cabot sailed on a single ship, leaving May 2nd 1497 heading higher into Atlantic currents traveling more northerly then the route Columbus took. On June 24th, 1497 Cabot spotted land, set into the bay and named it “Terra Nova” or “New Found Land.” When Cabot and a few of men went ashore onto the new land they raised a cross and a banner of England clamming the land for the King and for Christianity. Once on land they came to a dead campfire and a carved stick that had been painted and carved most likely belonging to the Beothuk. Cabot getting nervous, they set out and sailed along the coast for a bit longer then returned back for England on July 20th, 1497. Once Cabot returned home, he was looked at as a hero. As well as claiming the new land for England, Cabot found a large supply of codfish that could easily be caught. Henry VII rewarded Cabot with a cash bonus, annual pension and royal permission to join the next large expedition. Cabot set out again in 1498 with five ships. Cabot didn’t make his way back to “New Found Land”, and all five ships were lost at sea.…

Vasco Nunez de Balboa and Ferdinand Magellan shows that the 16th century is part of the exploration of the unknown because both of these explorers discovered invaluable information about previously unknown areas. Balboa was a conquistador and explorer hailing from Spain. He crossed the isthmus into the Pacific Ocean, and he was the first european to reach the Pacific Ocean from America. In 1509, to escape Santa Domingo, Balboa was a stowaway with his dog aboard Martin Fernandez de Enciso and Alonso de Ojeda’s voyage to colonize islands around the Americas. When Ojeda became injured the crew was left in San Sebastian de Uraba in Nueva Andalucia. They waited for Enciso’s return to sail for Hispaniola. It was at this time when Balboa was discovered…

George Lipsitz would most definitely disagree with this idea. As he pointed out in “Banda: The Hidden History of Greater Mexico,” Latino immigrants experienced many forms of hatred and discrimination in a country more or less thriving by their hard work at low wages, through government processes such as redlining and through the passing of Proposition 187 in 1994. Music can create a political space that allows for public inspiration, unity, and drive for change which is exactly the role banda played in these disenfranchised communities. The solidarity gifted by the banda movement allowed for masses of Mexican workers to come together as a community and mobilize politically, with "nonunion janitors, maids, garment workers, and restaurant employees…

Spanish wanted to colonize some of America, just like the Europeans. Building religious based Missions all throughout California was a way for them to maintain ultimate social, political, and economic control. Spanish explorers arrived on the border of California during the 16th century. The very first Franciscan mission was built in San Diego during 1769. By 1833, twenty two Spanish Missions existed from Southern California to Northern California. Native Americans made up about one-third of those who lived and worked at the Missions. There were an estimated 310,000 Indians living in California during the 16th century. The Spanish provided the Native Americans with the necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. Although the California Missions had the right intentions of providing for the Native Americans, the Spanish acted in an inhumane and unfair way.…

Six California’s Six California’s, proposed by a man named Tim Draper, is an idea in which California is to be split into six, individual states. This idea is said to be an opportunity for California to start fresh and to create a better future for the citizens. As of right, California is facing numerous problems that are impossible for just one governor to attempt to solve, but creating six California’s allows us to fix those problems. The current proposition to split California into six individual states gives us an opportunity to solve the many problems we face, such as poor representation, however it could create more problems than it solves. To begin, currently in California, we are not all well represented.…

David Hamilton, a wildlife protection specialist with the Missouri Department of conservation says, "We want otter and Kentucky wants turkey. We've got plenty of turkey, and since Kentucky doesn't have surplus otter, they have to get them in Louisiana". This type of trading among states to preserve endangered wildlife has become common practice.…
