Yossarian: Yossarian serves as the protagonist of Catch-22 and is a bombardier of his squadron. Yossarian differs from the average bombardier in that he views the war effort as a meaningless pursuit that simply takes the lives of the innocent. Yossarian does all he can to avoid flying missions, including feigning sicknesses to become hospitalized and moving the bomb line before the Bologna mission. He values life greatly, but in a rather selfish way; Yossarian does not find purpose in risking his own life to save those of countless others. However, when put in a dangerous position, he truly does care for his men and does what he can to keep them alive. Yossarian takes evasive action and does not care if he succeeds in his mission goals as…
Heller utilizes comedic satire throughout the entirety of Catch-22. Rather than blatantly stating all of the horror that war brings about, Heller uses humorous and ironic stories to convey what he clearly feels are almost laughable instances. Doc Daneeka’s “death" is a perfect example of utilizing humor to express an almost unbelievable truth. Because of his fear of flight (which is ironic, considering he is the flight surgeon), Yossarian convinces McWatt to log his name while never actually flying. During one flight, while Doc Daneeka remain on the ground (although he was accounted for as being on the flight), McWatt flies too low and kills Kid Sampson. Out of grief, McWatt commits suicide by flying into a mountain. Doc Daneeka, presumably…
When he first begins his duties, Milo has only one plane at his disposal, but after the other squadrons in Colonel Cathcart's group get wind of the fresh eggs at Milo's mess hall, Milo starts to gain more planes. On page 145, Heller writes, "Then the other three squadrons in Colonel Cathcart's group turned their mess halls over to Milo and gave him an airplane and a pilot each so that he could buy fresh eggs and fresh butter for them too." The rest of the groups in General Dreedle's combat wing eventually gave Milo even more planes and pilots, and Milo began the formation of his syndicate. In essence, this may seem like a good thing, but with his influence Milo took away one plane from each squadron depriving the wing of that much firepower. This is just one example of how Milo abused his…
I believe in the essay by Freeman Hrabowski the one sentence that summarizes the entire essay would the statement was, “ College graduates are much more likely to be employed than those with only a high school diploma and substantially higher salaries”(260). That statement cover all the details explaining the essay because in order to be successful you must get the proper education. The appropriate education will educate you on your career to understand the accurate way to complete your job’s task.…
In Catch-22, Joseph Heller uses scenes of violence, such as Snowden and Michaela’s deaths, to emphasize how easily war makes people trivialize the worth of human life. In doing so, Heller argues that war is a tragedy rather than a patriotic or celebratory cause.…
The short story "Saboteur," written by Ha Jin is a story of hypocrisy and bureaucracy.…
It was March 18, 2008, many watched and listened as one of the most persuasive speeches on U.S. race relations was given by at the time senator, Barrack Obama. This speech was entitled, “A More Perfect Union”, a line taken from the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, and was given at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA. It brought forth the concept that all men were created equally, however to this day we still strive to be treated equally. In one of the most important speeches of his campaign to run for president, Obama was faced with responding to comments made by Reverend Jeremiah Wright about the race relations and foreign policy in the U.S. Obama addressed the subjects of racial tensions, white privilege, and race inequality in the United States, discussing black "anger," white "resentment," as he sought to explain Wright's controversial comments. His response was one of the most memorable speeches in U.S. history.…
Indirect Action 4: Military. America’s military is by nature a conservative organization and polls historically place it in the conservative camp. However, over time Russia has conveyed to the conservatives’ information that the Federal government is bad, and that the US government is their enemy. Their deception and disinformation has grown in the fertile fields of the conservatives, and many are members of the US military. Take for example the Oath Keepers, former military members and gun owners who advocate that citizens be ready and prepared to conduct armed opposition to a future federal government seizure of firearms in violation of the Second Amendment. In fact, the Oath Keepers actively recruit members from within the US armed forces…

Hosmer's life and work have been liable to much insightful critique in late decades, with a few writers endeavoring to represent her remarkable global prestige as a female sculptor. While Power for the most part was perceived by art enthusiasts, craftsmen of history and by workmanship devotees, women artists like Hosmer were left in the shadows. The exposition coaxes out a perplexing web of mid-nineteenth-century worries that expect cutting edge distractions, including self-designing, gender roles, tourism, the ascent of VIP culture, and the craftsman's complicity with and fights against the contemporary press. All taken together, it looks to entangle and improve our comprehension of Hosmer and her key engagement with sculpture making , prompting…
Humans will always encounter conflict to the day we die and have had experienced what happens to society, when conflict develops. Conflict displays how ourselves’ experience changes and when we are striving to survive how we will influence other people to pursue the hope of surviving. An understanding of the nature of conflict is acquired through close study of the extraordinary story ‘The Rugmaker of Mazar-E-Sharif’ written by Najaf Mazari and Robert Hillman as well as the confronting story of ‘Persepolis’ created by Mariane Satrapi. These texts reveal that inner conflict can be catalyzed by conflict with the environment or others however an awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses can arise as a result of encountering this type of conflict.…
On August 9, 2014 Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. This event led to protests that lasted for weeks to fight for Michael Brown’s rights along with African American rights. The police officer, Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Brown was declared not indicted by a judge which caused even more anger in Ferguson. Many people showed their anger by setting several buildings and businesses on fire. I believe that different police policies, training, or administration could have prevented the events in Ferguson, Missouri.…
Even with violence occurring all over the world, Pinker argues that violence today is at an all time low. In order to support his position, Pinker first takes on the preconception that the hunter-gather society of the past lived peacefully compared to modern times. Utilizing a graphic on percentage of male deaths due to war, Pinker shows that the percentage of contemporary hunter gatherer deaths is by far higher than that of people living in the US and Europe in the 20th century. Also along the lines of warfare, Pinker provides the audience with a statistic that states the number of deaths from interstate wars has decreased from 65,000 per year in the 1950s to less than 2,000 per year in this decade. After providing warfare statistics, Pinker compares common examples of violence from the past to today. He mentions an example where in the past people would instantly die just for speaking out against a King where as today many people commit murder and other crimes and are still allowed to live.…
