During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…
Another example of helping my school community is setting up for Winter Formal. Key Club is a club that accumulates all of the values and ethics of service. As of this year, I have become a part of this organization. Now I like to sign up for as many volunteer opportunities as my time permits, and this club provides me with many of those. I have a lot of fun every time I contribute to these events and believe that these opportunities improve me as a person.…
National Junior Honor Society is a great opportunity for me; something that I am really excited to have. I would love to be involved in NJHS and share my ideas and listen to others ideas about fundraisers and collecting donations. I believe I have all the qualities to be apart of the NJHS. Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. I love helping and have participated in many charities. For example, every year for Easter and Christmas our family donates money, toys, and food to WGY Christmas Wish Charity and families in need. At Christmas we have gone around caroling to people in the Greenwich area. Being an applicant for the NJHS is an honor. I would love being considered for NJHS.…
At the start of high school, I learned that all students at my school were expected to perform sixty hours of community service before graduating. I hoped that my time would be well used, and that I could create a noticeable difference in someone else's life.…
The Boys and Girls Club of America helps thousands of Americans each year as a daycare, escape from home, way to meet new friends or to eat a sustainable meal that they wouldn’t be able to get at home. Another way that the Boys and Girls Club benefits kids is by having organized sports where the players can develop competitiveness, teamwork and become coachable. As someone who volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club I am able to experience all of the good that goes on both within and outside of business hours. As I wrap up my high school career and go on to the next stage in my life I often find myself looking back at not only those who helped shaped me into the person I am today but also the extracurricular activities I participated in. The Boys and Girls Club is one thing that continually pops into my head with the activities I partook in as well as the children and adults alike, without these experiences I would not have devolved my love for basketball, been so willing to give back to the community, or have been showed the do’s and don’ts of parenting.…
Community service is someone or a group of people provide a service to the community. It can be a reason or a choice; sometimes it’s mandatory for some people. You’re not getting paid to serve the community, but giving back hours. It’s like you repaying a debt to your society. It’s not the same as volunteering, but their similar. They both have different meanings to them. Everyone has to do it sometime in life. Also, the court system mainly use it on the people. Just know giving back in your society is repaying back for your services and kindness.…
Ethics has developed as people have reflected on the intentions and consequences of their acts. From this reflection on the nature of human behavior, theories of conscience have developed, giving direction to much ethical thinking. Intuitionists (Ralph Cudworth, Samuel Clarke), moral-sense theorists (the 3d earl of Shaftesbury, Francis Hutcheson), and sentimentalists (J. J. Rousseau, Pierre-Simon Ballanche) postulated an innate moral sense, which serves as the ground of ethical decision. Empiricists (John Locke, Claude Helvétius, John Stuart Mill) deny any such innate principle and consider conscience a power of discrimination acquired by experience. In the one case conscience is the originator of moral behavior, and in the other it is the result of moralizing. Between these…
“We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” While brainstorming ideas for this essay I came across this quote by Winston Churchill. Even if you are making a good living for yourself, you should always take time out of your day to give back; you never know when you might need someone to help you out. Volunteering my time to my community has always been something I’ve made time for. Not only does volunteering help others, but it can affect your own character. By volunteering you learn social skills, gain work experience, and if you are lucky enough, it will change your life.…
Altogether, being in the Youth Volunteer Corps group has allowed me to mature by seeing how much poverty is around and making me realize how grateful I should be. I have met new people and have become friends with people I thought I would never talk to. It has showed me how much fun you can have if you keep an open mind. The experiences I have gained will help me in the future as I move away from home and deal with diverse personalities and people from all walks of life. I…
I am spending my time volunteering at St. Marks United Methodist Church (St. Marks UMC). This church is an open community, working to create a comfortable atmosphere for anyone and everyone in and around the area. I work specifically with the youth of the church and I reach out to students who are my age or younger than me. I have been volunteering at St. Marks for almost four years, assisting in many different groups and organizations sponsored by our church. I volunteer at this church because it has given me an opportunity to be myself, explore talents, and make strong connections, and I want to help continue this effort and reach out to kids who are struggling with a lot of the same difficulties I faced. I believe that volunteering here is a great experience for someone studying psychology because you meet and get to know many kids who are facing various issues in their lives.…
Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I volunteer and participate with the Junior Meteorology Club of Elena L. Christian Junior High School. I help with certain fundraisers such as; bake sales, car washes and collecting donations. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving person. I also volunteered at the Agriculture Fair of 2010. I was helping out the Virgin Islands Police Department booth, assisting the police cadets, police officers, lieutenants and as well as the commissioner. Both my mom and I, we donated funds for Haiti at the VIPD in Frederiksted.…
Over the last few years I was involved with a few different activities like the robotics club and Civil Air Patrol. The Robotics club is a team composed of students from 9th grade to 12th grade along with adult mentors and we build and compete with a robot in the FIRST Robotics Competition. As member of the team I help with the responsibility of getting the robot programmed in the 6 weeks we have to build it. In the past two season our team has been to the regional competition that is held at Lehigh University and last year for the first time we had won a district competition and after regionals we had qualified for the opportunity to go to the World championship in St. Louis, MO. Outside of school I was apart of Civil Air Patrol which is a…
Caring for others has always been a deep passion of mine. As part of my course I have recently attended placement at a local residential home, where I would talk to and assist in caring for the service users. It was at this placement that I discovered the importance at providing support to people who may be feeling confused or distressed, particularly individuals with dementia. As a nurse this is an important skill to have. Initiative is another of these skills, in which I developed during my second placement at a specialist support centre for adults with learning disabilities.…
Did you know that students are now required to complete at least ten hours of community service in order to graduate? In order for students to have a more positive experience, school administrators should add more activities within the guidelines. Some activities that will give students a more positive experience are serving at food kitchens, disturbing gifts at salvation armies, and helping out at nursing homes.…
The definition of volunteer work is n altruistic activity with intentions of better someone else without financial earnings, but with the satisfaction of self-worthiness and self-respect. Many kids today help others outside of school for many reasons. Volunteer work looks great on college applications and stands out because not every high school student does volunteer work. Now ask yourself, if every student was required to do volunteer work in odder to graduate, how many kids would it affect and how? The possibilities include the include the affects of college applications, student drop out rates, and the definition of volunteering. Although some people may feel that volunteer work should be required in order to graduate, others may strongly disagree with this due to the fact that if volunteer work became mandatory, it would not only affect kids, but also no longer be ‘voluntary’.…
