Teaching cultural diversity in a classroom can be very difficult, but not impossible. One of the key areas that sometimes go without notice is working with families and developing curriculum together so that their culture becomes a learning forum as well. This will not only teach, but bring about a sense of pride and comfort so that collaboration will continue throughout the school year and beyond. With that being said it is not always easy. Unfortunately there is a lot of concern about whether or not many teachers have the proper knowledge or experience working in or living in diverse environments (Robinson & Clardy, 2011). According an activist from the Lulac Association, over three million students graduate from U.S. high schools every year. Most get the opportunity to pursue a college degree, strive for their vocational goals, and reach for their American dream. It is the sole duty of the teacher to assess the different learning styles early and develop a plan of action. An effective educator should have the ability to foster the students’ confidence levels and monitor the teaching strategies that are unsuccessful. I find that relating math problems to real-life situations enables the students to grasp the material in a unique way. Other ways to address a class with different learning styles is to allow peer tutoring and demonstrate cooperative learning. Cooperative learning allows the students to learn the material as a group. This method is extremely useful because it stimulates discussion and creates an environment where mistakes and triumphs are shared. When I first started school at the very young age of six I remember stepping through the stone threshold and into a huge elementary school with diverse attributes like height, nationality, personality and race. It was amazing to see all the diverse people at the school including myself! I thought to myself that I wouldn’t fit into school with the other kindergarteners at first but I actually did because most of the kids in my class lived in my neighborhood. The side in opposition to multiculturalism firmly believes that it weakens America by keeping immigrants from adequately assimilating to the core values of America’s Anglo Protestant identity. This side believes that multiculturalism weakens the “social bond” of the United States by denying that immigrants need to assimilate to the language and values of the country’s dominant culture. The rise of non-English speaking communities is seen as a detrimental factor in the goal of achieving unity in American culture. Opponents state that immigrants coming to the United States must always lose their previous culture from their country of origin, to be able to completely assimilate to and fully embrace American culture. As Norman Podhoretz explains, this is the price of immigration, a “brutal bargain” for the opportunity of a better life (Podhoretz).
