On visiting day, Tris’s mom comes to see her and informs her that the Erudite are planning something, and she needs to go talk to her brother.

Tris follows her mother’s instructions and goes to see her brother. While at the compound, she meets the leader of the Erudite, Jeanine, and learns that they are preparing to start a war with Abnegation.

Tris is attacked by one of her friends who later commits suicide.

The training instructor, Four, and Tris become involved romantically.

Tris goes through the Dauntless initiation ceremony and faces her fears in a stimulation. She places first out of all the other initiates.

Jeanine begins her war against Abnegation. She uses mind control on the Dauntless who she has made her soldiers to fight for her. Everybody but Tris and Four are under the influence of the mind control serum, because of their divergence.

Jeanine discovers that Four and Tris are only pretending to be under her control and she captures them with plans to kill Tris and brainwash Four.

Tris’s mother finds and rescues her daughter, but at the expense of her own life.

After finding the rest of her family, Tris infiltrates the Dauntless headquarters to stop the computer running the mind control program, and save Four from Jeanine’s serum that has manipulated his mind.

As the mind control ends, Four, Tris, and her brother, Caleb, leave on a train to seek refuge at the Amity faction compound.

Abnegation has very strict rules, and banned anything that makes one selfish. When Tris takes a test to see which faction she belongs in, her results were inconclusive. She was informed that she has a rare condition called Divergent, which means she can belong in more than one faction. The government says that it is dangerous, so they try to kill anyone who has it. Tris wants to conceal it, so even though being curious is selfish, she asks different sources for help and the information improved her understanding of it. Dauntless are known for being tough, so in initiation they are taught to fight. Tris is not strong, so she gets knocked out in the first thirty seconds of her fight. While in the hospital she is told she can not continue training, and she will have to leave. She felt discouraged because she did not risk everything just to quit now. Tris was not going to take no for an answer; so even though she was in extreme pain, she ran into the training room to continue initiation. The last occasion that Tris remains undeterred is when she goes zip lining. To take their minds of the pressure of initiation, everyone decides to go zip lining. Nobody wants Tris to go because they feel like she does not fit in with them, but she stands up for herself and reluctantly, they let her go. Tris was petrified, because if she backed out she would be made fun of; but she went down the…
