• The truth about Chi o Chi killed herself o Her father beat her twice.
For taking something her father told her not to take
Committed suicide at the age of 32.
Pham recalls a particular instance in which his father savagely beat his sister Chi for disobeying him and speaking to the leper boy. He "broke bamboo canes on her, exacting the Vietnamese punishment,"(Pham 56). o "Somehow, she became the family’s big shame, as if we’d somehow failed—failed her as we had failed ourselves,"(Pham 215). o She was a woman, who became a man, and was not fully accepted in either sex. Chi’s life and death were not discussed in the Pham family. Her inability to live up to the family’s new "American" ideals causes her isolation from her relatives. o On his trip of traveling around the world, Pham felt the way Chi did and asked his self how alone she felt when she ran away from home. o Pham realizes while traveling that he truly loves his sister, He realizes that Chi’s death, although tragic, is not the shameful act he once perceived it. o Pham feels his love towards his sister after traveling and looking around the world o Whenever Pham walked the streets and would see a stranger on the street, he would compare him or her to his sister, Chi. o Natural development of Chi acting and behaving like a boy.
