1. Define and explain four of the following five concepts (2-1/2 marks each):
a. expectancy theory
b. contingency planning
c. degree of centralization/decentralization
d. contingent worker

2. Departmentalization means breaking workers into logical groups. A number of different options make sense, depending on the organization. List five types of departmentalization. (2-1/2 marks) Explain each with a relevant example. (7-1/2 marks)
3. We discussed a number of issues in class related to text material. Two of these issues follow, and I would like you to defend one (or both) of the positions held by the protagonists regarding each of these positions. (5 marks each)
a. Jessica Menchella and Nathan Lunn were discussing the recent acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart by Loblaw Corporation. According to Jessica, this was a horizontal merger; according to Nathan it was a vertical merger.
b. James Chewka and Sheema Amin were discussing payments made by franchisees to franchisors. James thought it better to pay high up-front fees, and lower royalties; Sheema believed the opposite to be true; i.e., it would be better to pay low up-front fees and higher royalties.
4. We discussed in class seven (7) issues that are common to today’s human resource manager. Discuss four of these issues and why they are important in today’s workplace. (2-1/2 marks each)
5. Many people today feel that the Canadian economy is highly dependent on the number and quality of Canada’s small businesses. Why might this be so? How does small business contribute to the overall Canadian economy? (10 marks)
