Civil War in Somalia 1990s-ongoing
The Somali Civil War is an ongoing civil war taking place in Somalia. It began in 1991, when a coalition of clan-based armed opposition groups ousted the nation's long-standing military government.
Various factions began competing for influence in the power vacuum that followed, which precipitated an aborted UN peacekeeping attempt in the mid-1990s. A period of decentralization ensued, characterized by a return to customary and religious law in many areas as well as the establishment of autonomous regional governments in the northern part of the country. The early 2000s saw the creation of fledgling interim federal administrations, culminating in the establishment of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in 2004. In 2006, the TFG assisted by Ethiopian troops, assumed control of most of the nation's southern conflict zones from the newly formed Islamic Courts Union (ICU).

    Slavery in Sudan

Since the successful strife for independence from the UK in 1956 Sudan has been politically ruled by military regimes that favour Islamic orientated governments. Sudan has endured two prolonged civil wars in the remainder of the 20th century. These wars were rooted largely because of Islamic orientated Northern Sudanese dominating the non-Arabic and non-Muslim south. The first civil war broke out just before Sudan reached independence in 1956 but ended in 1972 after southern Sudan was granted the Addis Ababa Accords allowing regional autonomy concerning internal matters. (GlobalSecurity 2011) Civil war erupted again in 1983 - this time the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army fighting against the Sudanese government. This war was the onset of a long line of human rights infringements influencing present day Sudan. The second civil war was largely a continuation of the first caused by South Sudan fighting for independence, but this war was one of the most violent of the late 20th century with a death toll of around 2 million civilians and displacing 4 million South Sudanese forcing them to flee their homes and the country. (Highland 2013) The war eventually ended in 2005 when a Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed and after six years of autonomy and a referendum South Sudan was granted independence.…

    Isaaq Genocide

One of the ways that Barre was portrayed in this light was through utilizing the way the Isaaq felt, as they supposedly felt “deprived as a clan ”("Somalian Revolution") which would remove any doubt that they would not be the ones to spark any unrest with them and the new government. Now this wasn’t entirely without basis as there were some cases of “Isaaq outbursts against the central government [which] had occurred sporadically since independence” from the previous democratic government, before Barre had taken over. In response to the ‘violent’ Isaaq’s “The military regime conducted...reprisals against the Isaaq” and in many situations acted in an extremely violent manner, some of these acts include “destruction of water wells and grazing grounds” ("Somalian Revolution") Barre was aiming to cripple the Isaaq tribes, either by killing them off, or forcing them out of the country. There was a great amount instability on both sides as neither had total support from another foreign power. In the case of the Isaaqs, according to the Barre government “the dissidents had been gaining strength”("Somalian Revolution"). This claim makes the Isaaq out to be the enemy and instigator of any and all conflict that would occur…

You hear the word civil in such terms as civil rights, civilian, civilization and civil liberty. All are related to the concept of a common citizen and a member of society. So, a civil war is a war between citizens representing different groups or sections of the same country. That is how the Civil War in the United States between 1850-1860 started. The distinction of ideas about slavery between the South and the North was pretty much the main cause of the war. However if we look at the details carefully, the economic forces in the South combined with the cotton plantations and the reactions to abolitionism in the South were the main factors that caused the Civil…
