The one real mistake I believe we can make in life is to not learn from missteps

and challenges that come our way. In fact, it is in these missteps and challenges where I

have learned the most and become a better person. I believe that my life experiences

and skills demonstrate why the field of Clinical Social Work is best suited for me as a an

education and career.

I was born and raised in the Houston area with my family. My parents have been

together for 29 years and I have a twin sister and an older brother. Growing up, I felt that

we were a comfortable family with all the things necessary to be happy. I was unaware

that my father was involved with drugs and later that my brother would be as well. This

led to personal and legal difficulties for both of them and our family. I had to learn

quickly to adapt and saw that people just were not “bad” because they had

encountered or had problems in their lives. This allowed me to grow and learn in ways

other children may have never imagined, and I believe that because of my family, it has

contributed a great deal of my personal strength and acceptance of others.

I have also acquired many useful skills and experiences as a young adult and an

undergraduate student. One such experience was working with a local middle school and

high school for a

Unless otherwise cited, the career information presented in this paper was obtained from O8Net on-line (National Center for O*Net Development, 20??). Through the O*Net assessments I received a 28 in the category of social. The social category was the highest number compared to the next high of 14 in investigative. After looking through careers in the social category I felt the need to further research mental health and substance abuse social workers. I currently work in the field of mental health and substance abuse as a crisis counselor. I had seriously thought about going back to school to get my masters in social work after talking to making social work co-workers. However there were many aspects of the job that I disliked, but I wanted…

During the first year of the course I have become more aware of the importance of personal and professional development. I agree with Thompson (2002), who states that the development of personal and professional skills is fundamental to becoming a competent social worker and making the transition from student to practitioner. Therefore professional development is essential to social work students and practitioners to increase…

I had a long discussion with my dad today about religion, but I also got a touch of his childhood. As the discussion progressed, I came to the realization that I know nearly nothing about my father my whole life. This was one of the first times he actually spoke to me about his past in any sort of detail at all my whole life. The only thing he would tell me as I grew up was that his father passed away when my dad was nine and that his father was an honest man. I still have much, much more to learn about my dad's past, but the things he told me have made me so grateful to be born in America and to have such high hopes for a brighter future.…

Something difficult I have gone through that changed me. Although, in the beginning it was extremely difficult to cope, I believe this experience changed me for the better. It has shaped me into the person I am today. Being the oldest of three in a broken family has forced me to become a role model, and taught me to take on large responsibilities. I learned how to use my independence for the better of my siblings. I learned how to cope with difficult people, I learned how to put on a happy face, I learned how to leave my family life at home. I learned how to be happy with my friends and at school. I learned how to smile through the day, ultimately being content with my life. I gained the strength to look at the pros and not the cons. This unfortunate situation has caused me to become a more positive person. If I could give one piece of advice to…

    When Your Parents Divorce

I had just come home from the last day of school in my 9th grade. I checked the answering machine for new messages and I found what I had least expected - a message from my mother's divorce lawyer. Even though all the warning signs had been there, I was still surprised. Things were bad between my parents, and my mom had already threatened to divorce my dad several times that year. They started going out on dates again afterwards, though, and I thought they were past all that. Before things turned sour, I thought my family was completely normal. One of my friends had even said to me, “you have the perfect family.” It turns out, not so much.…
