The Classical ideal of ancient Athens pertains to the standard of excellence proposed by the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, beginning in the Golden Age of Greece. The ancient Greeks aspired to perfection in both body and mind, and sought a synthesis of the two poles of passion and reason. Through athletic behaviour, they were able to exercise the value of perfection of body. Through philosophy, government, poetry, drama, law, logic, history, mathematics and architecture, they were able to express their desire for perfection of the mind. Through artistic portrayal of the human form they tried to achieve a synthesis of passion and reason. The philosophy of Greek art of the Golden Age was that of moderation in all things, as represented by 'The Winged Victory'. In sculpture, the characteristic form was the male nude, which later inspired Michelangelo's Statue of David of the Renaissance. During the peak of the Classical Greek civilization, the idealized figures of Greek art and architecture exemplified order and harmony. In architecture, the most famous building was the Parthenon. To the ancient Greeks, monuments were to be treated as large sculptures. They were thus built around the same rules of symmetry and ideal proportion. Public rites took place in front of a temple, whre sculpture told the story of the temple's deity. The religion of the Classical period of Greek and Roman history was polytheistic. The gods and mythical figures of the civilization were the subjects of homage in the arts, including drawing, sculpture, and architecture. The signature city of the Greek classical era was Athens. The main contributions of the Golden Age of ancient Athens were democracy, individualism and reason. The ideals and values were transmitted from Greece to Rome, and were later revived by many cultures of Europe. The ideals of order and solemnity repeated themselves in the art and architecture of the ancient Romans, in the European Renaissance era and in the era of

The progression of Greek art does not simply begin with the Olympics in 776 BCE, but finds its origins in all of the civilizations that gave rise to the Greeks – the remnants of the besieged Mycenaeans, and all who conquered (and traded) with them. The loss of great civilizations often leads to dark periods, but from the ashes of Greece’s dark age emerged a civilization that revered humanity and went to great lengths to incorporate the idea of philosophy into all aspects of their empire – including art. City states joined forces, democracy was established, and skills lost during times of turmoil (reading, writing, painting, sculpting, architecture) were not only rediscovered, but reinvented. From the eastern inspired geometrics of earliest Greece, to stylize humanism in the Archaic, the mathematical perfection of the Classical periods, and the flowery realism of the Hellenistic - Greek art remains the standard by which all future art will be judged. This article will mainly focus on changes in Greek sculpture as an analogy for the changes in all of Greek art, simply because an attempt to chronicle all of the changes in the historical period would require much more than a short essay, and it’s my belief that sculpture most thoroughly reflected how art reflected the greater changes in the society. Regardless of historical argument about whether or not Greek culture and society were as great or as evil as either extreme proclaims, the fact remains that incredible works of art were spawned by great thinkers. Sure, maybe there was slavery, and maybe women were treated poorly, but that doesn’t negate the artistic value of the truly innovative art forms, starting with the very earliest pieces attributed to the Greeks, those in the period of the first Olympics, which also marks the point when the Greeks themselves considered their various city states united as one people, citizens of “Hellas” – distinct in that they spoke a…

Around the times that Athens defeated the Persian Empire and was declared as the strongest Greek city, Classical art was at its peak (480-323 BC). Out of all the Greek cities, Athens was the city that was advanced in politics, economics, and culture. During the period of time that the Athenians were dominating Greece, the classical art style emerged. The philosophical context of classical art is that the Greeks wanted to make sculptures of the perfect bodies so they studied bodies until they did it. The Greeks were able to learn how the body is shaped and then transfer it over onto a medium, where tons of practice resulted in classical art (perfect proportions). The classical style is often depicted with realistic bodies in a natural body shape.…

Discipline, as a verb, is defined as training (someone) to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. Using this definition I found two example of discipline in the bible. In the bible we can see the verb disciple being not just spoke but shown to us. In the beginning of the bible it starts out in Genesis where we can see the first example of discipline. This is just the beginning of the lessons of discipline that we are given to learn from. We can see the same verb used by God to redirect our thinking and change our mindset. God is not only is trying to correct us in our wrongs but he genuinely wants to see us grow in our relationship with him. This creates an example of positive discipline that we are a part of everyday. Another place that we can see great discipline is in the life, crucifixion and death of Jesus. The Greek population was increasing and with that new ideas emerged. These ideas developed into new styles used by Greek artists as Greece moves into the Classical period. The classical period was at the height of Greek strength and artists began to touch on any topic, be it historical, mythological or religious. The Greeks began to feel positive after they defeated Persians who tried to invade and this led to a sense of powerfulness. The Persians had established one of the most powerful and developed cultural civilizations in history. Being a cultural icon, the fact that the Greeks were able to conquer this territory gave them a sense of intellectual and artistic power. This power transferred into art and drove the movement towards creating the ultimate civilization. A great period in the arts began during the classical period as made evident in the expanding style that was used. A piece of sculpture known as “Hermes with Infant Dionysus by Praxiteles(350BC) touches on the sentiment of Greek interest in mythology and can be used as a piece to measure stylistic changes against. This sculpture addresses that Greek worship of gods as prevalent in the period and represents one of many myths that were communicated. The style of this piece was in keeping with the mindset of its people. It portrayed an ideal, a beauty and perfection that would have been important characteristics of a…
