A seed is a fertilized ovule that contains an embryo and transforms it into a new plant through the process of germination. Seeds remain inactive until conditions are right for germination. All seeds need water, oxygen, and proper temperature in order to germinate. However, some seeds require full light or darkness to germinate. According to Holm (1996) seeds have chemical inhibitors that prevent germination. A seed will not grow unless those inhibitors are destroyed by things like temperature changes, moisture, and sunlight. These conditions combine in infinite ways, making each plant's germination needs different. The first sign of germination is when the seed absorbs the water. Water and oxygen are taken in through the seed coat causing the embryo's cells to enlarge. The seed coat breaks open and a root emerges first, followed by the shoot or plumule that contains the leaves and stem (Campbell 2004).…

Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman is a 1997 children's book about the impromptu creation of a community garden in an inner-city Cleveland. As it comes alive, it breathes new life into an erstwhile sterile neighborhood. This book is not told from the perspective of a single character, but in a series of vignettes written from a first-person perspective of a very diverse group of characters. Some of the characters are young, some are old; some are new to America, some were born there. They all have their own reasons for coming to the garden and the significance it takes on for each of them is very different. They represent a variety of colors and cultures but come together to form a real community.…

During the Toxicity of Morton Salt on Radish Seeds experiment, we measured the levels of iodized Morton Salt to the growth rate of radish seeds. Each six packets had ten radish seeds with different level of iodized salt solution. The packet with no iodized salt solution grew the longest in a period of days, compared to the other packets that had iodized salt. Solutions 100% and 10% had no growth progress within the past five days. As for solutions 1%, .1%, and .01% grew, yet not as much nor fast as the packet with 0% of iodized salt. Before these results, we predicted that as the concentration of Morton’s plain salt increases in the solution used to keep the radish seeds moist, germination will yield shorter plant roots and shoots. Reviewing our results, the more iodized salt added to the radish seeds the longer it took for the seeds to grow. Based on our data our hypothesis is supported, as the more salt added germinating the seeds slowed the plants ability to grow.…

I moved here when I was eight. In Mrs. Fleck’s third grade class, nobody talked to me. Nobody but Maricela, that is. The moment I came here, she was the one I always talked to. We were best friends. She practically lived at my house! But then my little brother Evan was born. He had autism. I was afraid she wouldn’t like me anymore. Despite my thoughts, she stuck by my side. But that was eight years ago, and now I dropped out, and so did Mari. She’s also nine months pregnant! She tells me she had to go to this garden thing and she would be so happy if I came so she wouldn’t have to talk to Dolores, this stuck-up pretty girl. So I agreed to visit, but on one condition. I had to bring Evan.…
