Course Description: Management fundamentals with emphasis on the theories of management, the evolution of management thought, and the functions of management in organizational activity.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will:
1. Develop an understanding of the managerial role and the history of management thought.
2. Comprehend the processes of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling functions.
3. Understand the importance of corporate social responsibility and ethics in management.
4. Understand the context of management, specifically the impact of the organization’s external environment (technological, legal/political, socio-cultural, economics, and global) on the manager’s responsibilities.
5. Develop an understanding of the importance of managing a diverse workforce.
6. Be introduced to the topic of international management.
Class Format: This is an online course, which requires reading the assigned text, submitting responses to 18 chapter workshop exercises, submitting reports in response to 15 Manager’s Hot Seat videos, and taking two exams. The instructor is available to facilitate the learning process, and to respond to inquiries about the course materials. PPT slides will be posted to assist learning, but test material will be based on text chapter content. Additional guidance can be found in the Supplement to the Syllabus posted in Canvas.
Course Requirements: The student must complete both examinations and fully participate in all class workshop exercises. Students are expected to study all assigned text material and readings.
