MGMT 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior
Part I: Group development
The group is at the storming stage of group development. The storming stage is a period of high emotionality and tension among the members, also coalitions and cliques are form as individuals compete to impose their preference on the group and to achieve a desired status position (Schemerhorn, 2012). Christine by understanding stage of group development could realize at the forming stage that Mike behavior and commitment with the group could create highly emotion at the storming stage and should had address it at that stage.
Part II: Problem Identification
Primary problem is Christine lack of leadership skill. If Christine would had known the stages the group development, would recognize the forming stage and define group rules and defining the team tasks. Also would have identified that Mike behavior of lack of commitment would affect the team performance and the assignment goal of teamwork.
Secondary problem is Mike lack of commitment and loafing behavior. Mike lack of commitment assisting to the group meeting and behavior create hostility attitude and a feeling of exclusion from the team by Mike. A clear characteristic of group development storming stage. Christine should have been more active in her leader roles. Communicating to Mike as soon she identified his lack of commitment, was not an acceptable behavior as part of the team.
Part III: Retrospective Evaluation
Christine lack experience in leadership and a management skill is primary reason for the problem the group is going thru.
Christine lack of experience in leadership influence in that situation got to a bigger consequences. She should do some studies and research in the group development stages, so she can recognize and address possible the challenges. * Forming stage – know member of the group, establish acceptable behavior and define group rules and team task *
