AO1/Task 1 – Values and individual rights
Introduction
My assignment based on a positive care environment. We are using Southern Area Hospice in Newry, St John's House as an example. It was opened in 1989 to proved palliative care and support for the terminally ill. It is situated on Courtney Hill on the edge of Newry town. A hospice is a home providing care for the sick or terminally ill. Care is provided for patients residing the Southern Health Trust Area, from Kilkeel to Ballyhawley and from Crossmaglen to Portadown. Their aim is too provide the best quality of life for their patients and their families. For example, responding to physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and social needs and supporting families and carers, enabling everyone to live their lives as fully as possible. The hospice offers a wide range of different services, for example, palliative care units, day hospice units, out patient and in-patient units, social work for psychological, emotional and social needs, home care, bereavement and counselling support, therapy center, a chaplaincy and a patient helpline.
I choose the Southern Area Hospice as it is very local to our community. It’s in our city and isn't very far away at all. It has an extremely good service and the people that work there are extremely welcoming and gave us excellent information. Some of us also know people that work with the hospice or have been a patient there so it’s always good to learn more about it as it’s in our own community. Our school as also worked with the hospice before. We often do fund raises for it as it heavily relies on donations from the community as the government only funds for 27% of the money they need.
My experience and understanding of the hospice has changed completely since I’ve visited it. I was expecting it to be a quite depressing and sad place but its one of the most peaceful and joyful places I've been to. The people that works
