1. A brief description of the research project and issue under investigation, and an analysis of good practice in relation to this issue.
a. Within SW based NHS Trusts, there is an issue with the recruiting and retention of Band 5 Staff Nurses. This is one of the biggest pressure points within Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust at this given moment. This study is an attempt to look into why this deficit has appeared, and what steps can practically be taken to attempt to lessen the stress on both frontline operations and HR considerations of staffing.
b. Somerset Partnership NHS Trust is an amalgamation of Community and Mental Health Services, employing a rough total of 4,300 staff across 13 community hospitals and 4 trust owned hospital sites.
c. Recent issues with staffing across these sites have led to detrimental impacts which directly affect patient care, for example ward closure.
d. There are deficits in areas other than the Band 5’s, however none has the same adverse effect, so for the purposes of this research proposal; Band 5 Staff Nurses will be the sole focus.

a. Collate the number of vacancies by using VRF’s within a defined period of time, and then expand by using the VRF’s relevant to all current live vacancies.
b. Do the above but across all VRF’s at all bands to highlight the Band 5 deficit.
c. Analyse the VRF data geographically.
d. Can we identify
