Shoe Horn Sonata Speech Example
Good morning, Year12 of Wyndham College. My name is Bazil and I am here to briefly discuss the play "The Shoe-Horn Sonata" by John Misto in relation to the use of dramatic techniques used.

The Shoe-horn Sonata is concerned with the incarceration of two women held captive in a Japanese prisoner of war (POW) camp. Misto uses the play to demonstrate the devastation of war and the human spirit and will to survive, both prevalent themes throughout the play. Such themes are exemplified to the audience through the use of dramatic techniques such as music, projected photographs, voice-over, sound effects, symbolism and humour.

Music has a strong presence within the play, providing variety and emotional subtext to many of the play's scenes. It places the scenes within historical contexts and on some occasions suggests the irony of the situations in which the two women face. Examples include the use of the songs ‘Rule Britannia' and ‘Jerusalem', both of which depict the greatness and supremacy of England. However they are ironically used in reference with the fall of the British Empire and the capturing of the citizens whom England was to be protecting, hence refuting their pompous and arrogant attitudes. The song ‘Happy Times' is also used ironically by being juxtaposed with the sound of machine gun fire and ‘the cries of women'. These sounds are confronting and express the theme of the atrocities and brutality of war to the audience.
Contrastingly, the song ‘Bolero' in scene five symbolises the high spirits, determination and triumph of the women. This is emphasised by the quote "We forgot the Japs-we forgot our hunger-our boils-everything…Together we made this glorious sound that rose above the camp-above the jungle-above the war-rose and rose and took us with it. Fifty voices set us free." This use of music conveys the meaning of the themes of heroism, comradeship, the will to overcome oppression and survival.

    For example, the first eight measures of the piece feature constant, mostly scaler eighth notes with the horn starting the melody just barley louder than the eighth note lines which reference to the text of the first lines “When peace like a river, attendeth my way,/When sorrow like sea billows roll…” creating a moment of text painting that is not directly relevant to Holsinger’s rendition due to performance media used (Timeless Truths, 2016). Melodically, Holsinger’s is able to reflect the somber mood of the text by having lower, mellower voices carry the main tune while the upper voices serve as the more accompanimental figures until the high points of the piece, mostly when the melody goes into the refrain. This melody is mainly carried by the horn and trombone in the brass and low clarinet in the woodwinds (Holsinger, 1989). When the upper voices do come in, however, they help to create a very sublime moment within the music that is meant to reflect Spafford’s profound declaration of praise in the face of the deaths of his daughters.     As the show goes on, Clara sings a song called “The Beauty Is”which is her telling you of what she's experiencing for the first time somewhere new. After she meets fabrizio, and he's fallen in love, he goes on to sing a song in full italian called “Il Mondo Era Vuoto”. Dramatic music is played for Creon's entrance; this immediately communicates to us that he is a man of great importance and power.     The director creates his profluence within the film in two particular ways: by changing music and changing camera framing. Within most films, the majority of the soundtrack is ambient and inherent to the film. Music plays in the background, serving as an indicator of the desired mood of the scenes. Particularly, Schumacher uses different music varying in intensity to display the change in plot points that are more important for the shifts in the film. For example, in the scene where the KKK burns a cross on the front lawn, we first see Brigance sitting in his house and there is not a lot of music noticeable to the viewer.     Discussion of the way the play represents women’s rights to express themselves freely. Since Helens husband death, she has lived alone and transformed her home into a work art by creating a myriad of cement wise men, camels, owls, mermaids and other figures around the house, and decorating the inside with dozens of candles and mirrors. She has created her own Mecca of beauty and freedom amid the harsh church-going Afrikaners and voiceless coloreds of this desolate region of South Africa. Through this Helen has learned to express herself, her thoughts and work of art freely without worrying what other people are saying. Helen found comfort through creating the sculptures and kept expressing them freely in her own home. Helen lived on her own and since her husband passed on, it was then that she discovered how to express herself. She did it on her own accord and alone without a man in her life. People in her region used to walk by and think she was crazy and her sculptures are a sign of madness and they made judgments without knowing her or without even trying to make the effort to get to know her or try to get an explanation from her. If they had taken a moment to talk to her they would have known that it was her way of expressing herself freely in her own home. The Mecca metaphor speaks to the relationship between imagination and freedom. Likewise Miss Helen candles the Afrikaners community expected her to shivered up and die after her husband death, for them, the right thing to do was for her to close the drapes to keep out of the light. But instead Miss Helen began to have visions of Mecca, an illuminated city that she began to recreate in a series of concrete images. In doing this, she alienated herself from the whole Afrikaners community, except Marius.
