First, Atticus’ character has a lot of courage. In fact, an example of Atticus’ courage in the book is when he stepped into the street to face down a rabid dog (p.96). Jen and scout were pleased of, and impressed by, his courage in such an unstable situation. (But shooting something wasn’t really Atticus’ idea of courage. He considered courage on a more intellectual level, as a life lesson, not as something that can be proved with a weapon). Furthermore, there’s also when Atticus went to the jailhouse to protect Tom Robinson from the mob he knew was coming after him. Even though Atticus was against several men, he held his ground until his children showed up (p.150-155) or when he refused to fight or even arm himself against Ewell although Jem and Scout requested it. He believed that once Ewell had threatened him in public, he’d satisfied his vengeance. (Unfortunately Atticus was wrong). Therefore, the character of Atticus in the book has a lot of courage.
Secondly, there is a lot of unexpected courage on Scout’s side. In fact, on Scout’s first day of school, she decided to inform Miss Caroline of Walter Cunningham’s situation. Miss Caroline had just criticized Scout for her ability to read, however, Scout still felt the classes need of leadership.
