The Pigtail
The Pigtail –William Makepeace Thackeray This poem ‘the pigtail’, written by William Makepeace Thackeray is a humorous poem, which revolves around a foolish act done by a sage. Throughout the poem, the poet laughs at this wise man, who does not have any practical knowledge, but uses his thearatical knowledge and does foolish things. In this poem, the sage tries to change his pigtail’s place and move it in front of his head and he thinks if he turn around and this pigtail would also turn and come infront of his head which is extremely funny. “There lived a sage in the days of yore And he a handsome pigtail wore”
The poet narrates us about a sage, who lived in the past with a beautiful pigtail. Usually sages are wise men and we expect them to do wise things. But this sage worrying over a pigtail which is actually useless. Even a common man can understand this truth, but this wise man is unable to understand this fact. He just think according to his logic and forgets even the practical side of the matter. As reader’s we understand what would happen if our hair grows in front of our head, we would be unable to see, breath understand it would affect our normal life and we would have to face so many bad consequences. The illogical, irrational behavior of this sage creates humour, and we readers cannot help agreeing that the poet has made humour successfully , out of sage’s behavior. “he mused upon this curious case And swore he’d change the pigtail’s place”
Actually this case neither has anythi g to worry about nor this is a curious case. But this sage worried about this for along time and gave an oath that he’d change the pigtail’s position, which is apparently impossible and very funny. This small thing is a serious problem for this wise man and this

Through examining the life of Kenan, a middle aged man, it will be proven that humour has an important role in his daily life. Kenan has the duty of carrying canisters to the brewery to bring clean, filtered water for his family and Mrs. Ristovski, the neighbour. Before the war, Kenan was a clerical assistant at an accounting firm. His journey to the brewery is very risky because at any point he may be shot; therefore, humour has a huge impact in the way Kenan presently lives his life. Before Kenan leaves his house his wife and him joke about their clothes: “Would you like me to get you some shoes?...No, she says. But I’ll take a hat if you have time...Of course, he says. I would assume you would like mink?” (Galloway, 26). At a time of war, fancy clothes will not benefit either of them, but he leaves his wife in a good mood. Lewis Carrol takes the reader down the rabbit hole into a bizarre world of changing size, babies that turn into pigs and a cat that is nothing but a grin. The reader’s journey is assisted by the language technique of repetition, ‘down, down, down’. At the bottom of this rabbit hole is an inviting bottle marked ‘drink me.’ Alice’s shrinking size is accompanied by the exclamation, ‘what a curious feeling…. I must be folding up like a telescope’. The simile helps capture the weird and bizarre nature of the change-taking place. This shrinkage is reversed when she eats a little cake, and her growth is greeted with the words ‘curiouser and curiouser’. Carrols use of and focus on language stresses the topic of bizarre.…

Mankind is a Medieval Morality play which is an allegory to the fall of Adam as it centres around its main character Mankind who is the representation of humankind and how he succumbs to the temptation and his repentance from this sin. The play distinctively plays around the theme of religion, good vs evil, hard-work vs idleness, body vs soul while dealing with its characters, their dialogues, and the word-play within it and by parodying Latin language and the beliefs associated with it. Mankind is not a little comedy of rural life, but a Morality play, written, as were all Morality plays, for the purpose of teaching, through the medium of allegory, a lesson for guidance of life. In this play we find a great proportion than usual of scenes given up to jesting and horse-play – the regular Morality method of depicting the vicious side of life.…
