The theme that I am about to explore is death. Death is a scary event that will happen to everyone. Every moment of the day someone dies, and unfortunately innocent people are getting killed every day from these vicious wars going on in the world. No one seems to think about others and how they feel. Guns, bombs, gas attacks, they all kill and take lives of parents, children or even whole villages.
In the poem “War Photographer” death is the main theme. It talks about two sides. The first is, the risk photographers takes when reporting from a place in war, secondly the death of the people in a war.
The first line quotes
“In his dark room, he is finally alone”
This means the photographer is in his workroom and is alone. “The only light is red and softly glows” The red light represents danger also the blood lost in the war. In a darkroom no light is allowed apart from red. So this red light also indicates he has a red light on in the background.
“…as though this were a church and he a priest preparing to intone a Mass…”
This is a metaphor as though the photographer is a priest who will pray on a mass of people.
“Belfast. Beirut. Phnom Penh. All flesh is grass.”
This line is a religious line, about countries that fought over religion. Belfast is a place in Ireland where protestant and Catholics fought against each other. Beirut is a place in Lebanon where Muslims and Jews fought and last you have Phnom Penh is a place in Cambodia where atheists fought each other.
Then you have the extract from Isaiah “all flesh is grass” meaning that all the religions
In stanza two the line
“He has a job to do”
This means the photographer must put his feelings behind him and do his job to get the truth out. Also his other job is to process the photos as he is in the darkroom.
“Solutions slop in trays beneath his hands…”
Here it says that the reporter has lots of solutions in mind but can’t use them. Another meaning for this line can be
