In both Romeo and Juliet & West Side Story there are two ‘rival’ gangs/families which both hate each other. The main male characters have many things in common. In fact, Toni (WWS) and Romeo (R+J) both miss the beginning fight at the beginning of the plays; they both fall in love and end up getting killed. However, it’s not just the male characters: Juliet (R+J) and Maria (WWS) both come from families that hate each other's boyfriend's (Romeo & Toni) families.

What would Romeo and Juliet be like if Juliet hadn't died? What if Paris killed Romeo, instead of vice versa? What if instead of occurring several centuries ago, it took place on the streets of New York City during the 1950s, with a bunch of fresh-faced youths posing as street toughs and dancing and singing their hearts out? Well, just take a look at West Side Story, and you will have your answers. It is impossible for anyone familiar with both texts to not note the obvious major similarities between the two plays. From the opening scenes in both, up through the rumble in West Side Story/death of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the plays mirror each other (Poelstra). It isn't until the last part of West Side Story, where Tony, our modern-day Romeo, dies and Maria, Tony's Juliet, doesn't (unlike the two star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare's work), that the major difference between the two works becomes apparent.…

Romeo has a stronger bond to Friar Lawrence than he does with his parent and this makes the Friar the father figure of Romeo just like how the nurse is for Juliet. Verona respected and loved him; in addition, he was also a handsome man who falls easily in and out of love. During the play, Romeo’s character evolves from adolescence to adulthood as a result of his love for Juliet and his inherited involvement in the feud between the Capulets and Montagues.…

Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet portrays relationships in different ways to define and foreshadow the ending of the play; Romeo and Juliet’s death. The prologue sets up conflict by stating the ‘two’ rivalries, always referring to them in pairs ‘two households’ and ‘two foes’, otherwise known as the ‘Capulet’s’ and ‘Montague’s’. It sharpens the conflict as the play is set in ‘fair Verona’ and violence and death occur in a beautiful place. The emphases of oppositions in this play define the relationships, such as, Montague’s and Capulet’s, light and dark and love and hate. Due to the extent of antithesis, in the play Romeo and Juliet’s love grows in darkness and ‘stealth’.…

The play centres around the rivalry between two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, and the victims of this conflict. As the play progresses, it reveals how human beings are capable of many things. They can be incredibly nice and generous, but they can also be very greedy, selfish, and deceptive. This is particularly suitable given the key theme of human behavior. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare demonstrates how even the kindest person can be deceiving to a lot of people or how money can make people do almost anything. This play teaches the audience that these characteristics is something that everyone is capable of in one form or another and not many people realize this but these rivalries may still exist today which is also adds to the reason as to why Romeo and Juliet should remain in the syllabus for year 9 students.…

The West Side Story is set in Upper West Side Manhattan. It is about rivalry between two teenage gangs of different backgrounds. Anton, a member of the white gang, fell in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang.Romeo and Juliet is undoubtedly the most popular romantic love story to ever hit the literary world. It talks about intense passion between the star-crossed lover Romeo and Juliet. Their love was doomed from the start because of their feuding families- the Montague represented by Romeo and Capulet, by Juliet. The overriding theme, of course, between the two stories – Romeo and Juliet and The West Side Story is love – deep, intense and passionate love. The kind that defies everything even families and loyalties. There is no specific moral that one can gather from both stories on love and relationships. Both stories seek to portray the chaos and obstacles that surround passion and love. Violence brought about by love is another theme that permeates in both stories. In both stories, love is linked to death. The poem ‘Lord Ullin’s Daughter’ had a story which was similar to the one of Romeo and Juliet or The West Side Story.…
