In a society that offers no hope of happiness or release from struggle and suffering, people quite naturally begin to place their hopes elsewhere. They respond to their condition by hoping for something that lies outside the conditions and constraints they cannot control or influence. Religion becomes some kind of hope for rescue from life. Religion responds by offering either internalization to a spiritual realm or an external hope of a better world and a better life beyond the pale of death.…
Religion encourages citizens to be more virtuous. In the words of Tocqueville, “it [religion] facilitates their use of it [freedom],” meaning that without religion to bound human intellect, members of a democracy would not be able to make use of freedom (Tocqueville 280). Religion also teaches delayed gratification which prevents people from falling into an endless spiral of greed. Most importantly, “faith alone is the permanent state of humanity,” and without faith, humans would lose the part of themselves that gives them hope for the future (Tocqueville 284). Hope fuels humanity, and religion is “only a particular form of hope” that is potent enough to drive humanity to greatness (Tocqueville…
It reminds people of the love of God and his mercy, and yet causes people to remember His holiness and the truth of His words at the same time. Although this message isn’t perfect, it does provide a strong balance to some of the common teachings that are deceiving people in this generation. Such a message, if preached today, could help the church to wake up from its slumber, and help to prepare believers for the return of…
According to Cox, “Preaching allows the brain to rethink, reorganize, reconnect and reconstruct itself” (71), all of this occurs along the neuropathways. In the end, the brain “retrains” itself. He noted that all aspects of a worship service lead up to the preaching of the Word: “The message is more than the sermon; preaching is more than the sermon; The sermon is found in the hymns, the prayers, the Scripture readings and the spoken word” (73). With this in mind, preaching must be given prominence! Cox added that preaching must include application. “Sermons that do not apply to the lives of the worshipers are objectified” (74). According to Cox, preachers, vying for listener’s attention, must preach the “immediate gratification of peace with God” (76).…

Religion negatively influences the United States' government. Throughout the history of the U.S., government has constantly been influenced by Christianity. It started when Europeans came over and tried to colonize the U.S., and it is still continuing today in our government.…
Religion has a big impact on every human especially with the way they think and the way they see life. Religion all depends on the person. Some people depend on their religion a lot more than others. Some people believe religion is the answer to all their suffering. In the Eastern State Penitentiary, religion had a significant impact on prisoners. It helped Prisoners find their true hearts and to help strengthen prisoners personal connection with god. Religion helped these prisoners produce religious knowledge and insight into their personal lives. The purpose of religion in the penitentiary was to make prisoners truly regret there wrongful actions and to ask god to forgive them. The prison cell was designed in a way that the only light coming into the cell was provided by god. This sent a message to the prisoners that all miracles and blessings come from…
Bronislaw Malinowski says that religion performs a social function by providing psychological support during times of emotional stress that might otherwise threaten social life. Such as life crisis like birth marriage and death and it helps with uncertain and uncontrollable events. This again obviously states that religion is not a force for social change; but it's more like a thing that helps you get through a hard time or whatever the situation may…
From the word religion, it came from two Latin words “re” and “ligare” which to reconnect. Religion promotes high principles of human morality for the establishment of good relations among society’s members and eliminates all discrimination. As a result of this, it creates teamwork. It makes the society work as a team to help each other get by on “the passage of life” instead of making it more difficult. Also doing this will not only reduce conflicts and hatred with one another, plus it also keeps everyone organized and will work together to create a better world for the next generation of our world. Even though we know the purpose of this, why is this important to…
An Illinois News Bureau article World survey links religion and happiness - for some written by Diana Yates, expresses this with a study which found that individuals affiliated with religion appear happier than those lacking faith in societies that cannot provide even the most basic of needs, such as food. Finally, all people need a feeling of hope, “No matter how bad the situation is, the belief in a divine power which metes out ultimate justice can provide an almost inexhaustible source for hope and optimism from which we can draw new strength” (Nick). This means religion can provide hope even in the darkest of times, even when one thinks it will never get…
Patel’s lecture made me realize that it is critical to being a human being and living with other human beings to have an awareness and a great sense of respect for all religions. Not being aware of other religion’s practices is like walking through life with your eyes closed. It is not possible to be a well-rounded human being without taking the time to learn about religious traditions of multiple different religions. This is especially important if someone wants to travel to a different country or attend a new church that they have never been to before. According to Patel, people that plan on attending football games should have some sense of different religious practices. Religion is everywhere and if a person isn’t careful or knowledgeable,…
It causes political debates, wars, and promotes people to live certain lifestyles. Religion also drives people to their dreams. If you have faith in the fact that God gave you free will and wants you to be the best person you can be, you can go anywhere you choose. Faith in God tells you that you will get through your hard day at work or in school. It also tells you that money is not an obligation because He will provide scholarships, loans, a raise, or whatever sources needed. I believe that having faith in God will make you successful and will help you live your dreams.…
Islam is the second most popular religion in the world. Islam was created to bring peace and unity throughout the world. In the United States, citizens often view fellow Muslims as a threat, due to encounters, such as nine eleven. We have been stereotyped as violent individuals who forcefully try to instill our religion unto others, when that is certainly untrue.…
Prelude: Originally I had my TA, Amy Picknell sign me up for the KTC visit on Sunday September 16th. However, I unfortunately had to go to an unexpected funeral on that Saturday and Sunday so I wasn’t able to go to the KTC meditation. I ended up leaving Columbus Friday night and on my way down I kept looking and looking for places to visit and couldn’t find anything. Then, out of nowhere I noticed some of the places listed on carmen and one of the places was a Buddhist temple in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The funeral was in Dayton and Yellow Springs was no more than 35 minutes away. So me being the angelic student I am, got up on Saturday at 6:00AM…
