Directions: Using complete sentences, answer the following questions about the themes in "The Cask of Amontillado":

1. How does the author want the reader to feel while reading "The Cask of Amontillado"?
I think the author wants the readers to feel suspense and anxious to know what’s going to happen next. I felt anxious trying to figure what Montresor was going to do to Fortunato, I didn’t expect him to intoxicate him with wine and basically bury him alive.
2. What techniques does the author use to help you visualize the place, the people, and the events that are taking place within the story?
The author describes everything very well. He describes what Fortunato is wearing, he describes the vaults and what is inside and around them, the stench inside the vaults, and he uses many adjectives and uses imagery.
3. How has the author described the characters to make them seem like real people?
Throughout the short story the author describes what they are wearing and how they are feeling.
4. Does the author expect the reader to make an emotional connection to the story? Explain your answer.
I don’t think so, I could never give someone revenge just because they have been insulting me for so long. But I think if you have had previous bullying of such kind then you would want revenge. Towards the end though I did have an emotional connection because Montresor felt guilty of what he was doing to Fortunato and I felt bad for Fortunato as well.
5. Think back to the events that take place in "The Cask of Amontillado," and think about the attitudes and actions of the characters. Now, write a theme statement for "The Cask of Amontillado."
I think that a good theme statement would be that revenge is not always the right way to handle things. Because Montresor was killing his friend, he felt guilt.

The story takes place in Italy at a carnival where Montresor and Fortunato meet each other by chance, or so it is seems. The mood at the carnival is lively and exciting. It is then that the two men head towards the catacombs of Montresor's home in search of the wine Amontillado. The catacombs are a place of death where skeletons lie scattered against the damp walls, which are covered in nitre. Montresor dons a "mask of black silk" and a heavy knee length cloak (149). Montresor's clothes seem to indicate his wanting to conceal himself so he can carry out his devious plan. On the other side of the spectrum, Fortunato wears a "tight fitting parti-striped dress, and his head [is] surmounted by the conical cap and bells" (149). His clothing seems to indicate his trusting but foolish nature. The clothing of both men seems to set the mood for the type of characters they are. However, Montresor's true character is indicated through his words. From the beginning of the story his vengeful nature sets the tone for the acts that will follow. One of the first things that Montresor narrates to the reader about Fortunato is that he "…must not only punish but punish with impunity" (149). Montresor is also manipulative, as he tells Fortunato that he will have someone else taste the Amontillado, knowing that by doing this Fortunato will feel compelled to taste the wine himself. "As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchresi. If anyone has a critical turn it is he. He will tell me…" (150). In addition to being manipulative and vengeful he also…

The first omission in Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” is the mystery of the setting. Because of the vagueness of where the carnival is, readers have to imagine where the setting is taking place. The readers have to inference if the carnival is taken place in an unnamed European city. Ammary inferences that the setting, “could either be the Italian Carnival in Venice or the French Mardi Gras”. Also, one trick of investigating the place is by depicting the names of the characters, “Montresor is a French name; Foruanto is an Italian name” (Ammary). The setting of the story increases the readers prediction of the unfolding murder because it evokes darkness, uncertainty and suspense. The carnival is known as a symbol of celebration and happiness,…

The plot of the story is a simple one. Montresor tales revenge on his friend Fortunato by luring him into the tunnels under the family estate. There he leads Fortunato into the depths of the catacombs where he buries him alive by walling him into a niche. The story is told in first person from the point of view of Montresor himself. The exposition of the story occurs when Montresor tells us that he wants to take revenge on Fortunato because “he ventured upon insult.” We also learn that he intends to go unpunished for this act of vengeance. The narrator informs us that he is going to continue to smile in Fortunato’s face, but use the pride his victim has in wine to lure him into the catacombs to taste some of his non- existent amontillado. At this point, the reader knows the conflict will be one of man against man. It is an external struggle because Fortunato and Montresor are in a life and death fight. However, the conflict is largely internal, because Montresor has a fierce hatred that Fortunato is unaware of. The narrative hook seems to occur when Fortunato follows Montresor into the vault. Even if the reader was confused by the language of the first paragraph or is puzzled by the motive of the narrator, he is curious to know what will happen next. We know the moment of revenge is at hand, but what is Montresor going to do to Fortunato? Why is he taking him underground?…

Firstly, Poe introduces a very interesting theme called a gothic theme. Likewise, in Poe’s story Montresor hides his intent of hate towards Fortunato; leaving a dark foreboding killer intent to be felt by the readers. Furthermore, Montresor gets Fortunato drunk, so that he doesn’t realize he’s being chained up. For instance, in the story it says “I broke and reached him a flagon of De Grave” (238). Incredibly, as Montresor and Fortunato get to the crypt, Montresor finds a pile of bones. Nevertheless,…

It is this ironic tone that proceeds to perpetuate a sarcastic, light, almost comedic description of a truly horrendous deed. Perhaps through this familiarity, Poe is suggesting that we, as readers, also share Montresor’s unremorseful, sociopathic view of committing murder. As the story progresses, Fortunato, unaware of his malicious intent as we now are, accosts Montresor with excessive warmth. Montresor comments ironically that he was ‘so pleased to see him, I should never have done wringing his hand’ (Poe). We, as the reader, know this to be untrue and this is an example of the personal relationship Poe is establishing between narrator and reader. Poe continues this ironic flattery, ‘My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day’ (Poe). So begins this tragic disparity of awareness rife throughout the story. Fortunato has no comprehension that Montresor’s flattery is false and that he indeed intends to kill him, yet we as the reader do.…
