ryhansen@kaplan.edu Dixie earned her LPN and ADN from Hawkeye Community College. She then went on to complete her MSN at Walden University. At Kaplan she serves as a full time nursing educator working specifically with Medical Surgical students in clinical‚ lab and classroom settings. In her spare time Dixie enjoys spending time with her husband‚ three children‚ one grandson and her pets. She loves spending time outdoors and especially loves water-related activities like jet skiing and swimming. Congrats

Enzyme Catalase What Factors Affect Enzyme Activity Michelina Bartolotto Lab Biology 111B February 2‚ 2014 /media/common.studymode/studymode-upload/stm/files/e1b9a3d6adf94ca848b12159c31f11b0.docx INTRODUCTION Enzymes are proteins that function as biological catalysts (Perry‚ Morton 2007). They maintain the body’s stable internal balance‚ and without them life would

Effects of Temperature on Enzyme Biology Introduction In order to understand the activity of enzymes at different temperatures the ability of the enzyme to function can be measured. This is important in many applications such as Polymerase Chain Reaction for forensics as well as genetics research where manipulation of temperature-dependent enzymes allows for replication of DNA segments. Bennett states‚ “when the energy - measured

Diffusion and Osmosis Through Dialysis tubing We did this experiment to test the diffusion of different substances through dialysis tubing. We used what we knew about diffusion to make predictions on what we thought the mass of the dialysis tubing to be after submerging them for 30 mins and we knew that diffuse occurs from highest concentration to lowest concentration. Since the dialysis tubings are filled with different substances than what they are being put into then they should all gain

My lab group studied the effect of PH on reaction rate/ enzyme activity measured by foam height. PH is the measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. The higher the hydrogen ion concentration‚ the lower the pH. Every enzyme has an optimal PH‚ meaning they have a very small window in which they are most active. Our enzyme (potato smoothie) had an optimal PH of 7.0-7.5. We know this because we measured the enzyme’s reaction rate by measuring foam height. The largest foam height we

of this lab was to compare the action of a catalyst (enzyme) under different environmental conditions. This was determined by performing a variety of different experiments. The first experiment was performed by adding hydrogen peroxide to sand. Due to the fact that the sand was not soluble in the hydrogen peroxide‚ no reaction thus no catalyst were present. Manganese dioxide was also added to the hydrogen peroxide creating a moderately fast reaction thus leading to believe that an enzyme was present

55. a) Cuticles on the outermost layer of angiosperms are clear‚ which allows for light to pass through. The leaf is shaped in a way that will allow it to absorb more sunlight and be more efficient. Photosynthesis takes place in the spongy parenchyma and the palisade parenchyma. In order to obtain food‚ it is controlled by the stoma which controls the passage of gas and water. b) Water and food is transported through the xylem. The water will eventually be transported to the leaf tissue while the

Professor Eischen BIO-151 April 4‚ 2014 How Environment Can Effect Enzymes Introduction: In a chemical reaction there sometimes can be a catalyst present known as an enzyme. An enzyme is a protein that speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the amount of activation energy required to start the reaction. By lowering the activation energy‚ more of the substrate is able to participate in the reaction‚ speeding it up. Enzymes are substrate specific. The substrate is what the enzyme bonds to. That

Adriana Gutierrez AP Biology Lab 9 Analysis 1. For this experiment‚ what were the independent variable and the dependent variable? What were the constants? The independent variable of this experiment are the environmental factors that you are testing on the rate of transpiration‚ so our independent variables would be bright light‚ fan‚ dark‚ and misted. The dependent variable is the rate of transportation because this depends on whatever environmental factor the plant is placed. The constants
